Terrible. I think we would have made a better assessment than the midwives, I can't understand why blood tests were not routinely carried out.

Let's hope 'lessons will be learned' to prevent this repeating elsewhere.

This Government far more than any other are destroying the NHS for their own greed. We hear about horror stories from the NHS and improvements must be made, but no system will ever be perfect. What we don't hear about is the hundreds of thousands of people who are looked after very well every day.

Check out the link below to see how many Government officials are putting their money in to private healthcare. From a low carb diabetic blog post I posted some time ago.

"In total 66 MPs have financial links to companies involved in private healthcare. Of them, 53 are Conservative MPs, 9 are Labour MPs, and 3 are Liberal Democrats, leaving 1 other from another party. This means, 79% of MPs with these links are Conservative.

The interests range in influence from donations made by individuals, shares in a company, or adviser to a company, owner, overseas visits and hospitality, and directorships.

These parliamentarians coupled with the 142 Lords with the same interests, make a total of 206 parliamentarians with financial links to companies involved in healthcare.

All of these public servants were allowed to vote on the Health and Social Care bill, helping it pass into Act.

Recent released research by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism has revealed 124 members of the House of Lords ‘benefit’ from the financial industry.

Several of these Peers are linked to the Healthcare companies and many of these companies will be funding the private healthcare companies that are threatening the very existence of the NHS.

The House of Lords is an open house for companies to attach themselves to key public servants, lobbying and influencing policy that affects are lives."

From the article "Pregnant mum Abby Lloyd lost her baby son just days before his due date after midwives mistook her diabetes for a sugar craving.

The fit and healthy 27-year-old could not understand why she was hankering for sweet foods and starting to gain weight.

At her worst she was downing litres of sweetened fruit squash every day, but despite telling medics there was a history of diabetes in her family they failed to carry out checks.

And tragically, just ten days before she was due to give birth, Abby lost her baby, reports the Sunday People.

An investigation found she was suffering from gestational diabetes and the NHS has awarded her compensation.

In a landmark decision the hospital at the centre of the blunder now carries out tests on all mums-to-be for gestational diabetes at 20 weeks."

This was so sad to read, a pin prick test would have revealed so much !

I just hope that not only this hospital but ALL hospitals do now routinely carry out checks on all mums to be.

    All the best Jan

I actually thought a BG test WAS routine for expectant mothers ? If not, as you say Jan, it should be.

You only have to turn up at our place for dinner or a BBQ and you get a swift BG check, just ask our friends and family. They have said to me where's your white coat and stethoscope. Then I tell 'em I used to be a gynaecologist but got struck off. affraid

    Getting me coat.

The sad thing is,2 of my children were born at Milton Keynes General(The hospital in question) and my wife was under the team there throughout both pregnancies and back then in the late 1990's-early 2000's they were excellent and she was closely monitored and tested for all sorts of things throughout both pregnancies including being checked for gestational diabetes! I'm very saddened that things have gone so backwards that this tragedy was allowed to happen.

Looking at WebMD it says "All pregnant women should be screened for gestational diabetes during their pregnancy. Screening may be done by taking the woman's medical history and examining certain risk factors, but an oral glucose tolerance test is also recommended."

I wonder does this happen at all hospitals?

Must try and ask some new mums ...........

Update from my comment yesterday when I said " Must try and ask some new mums ........... "

I did and I had helpful replies to my question ...... the mums I spoke to were tested for diabetes and one of them went on to have a Glucose Tolerance Test done - so hopefully this is now the norm at all hospitals - we can but sincerely hope it is.

Thanks Jan. Sadly, most new practices & procedures come about because of previous mistakes. Sad loss for a mum but she may end up saving many !
