There's an old study on SMBG by Andy Karter which came out about the same time as the POS Andrew Farmer studies which may also help. Farmer was obviously paid by the NHS/NICE to discredit testing which he did by instructing the patients to "maintain adherence to their diet" so actually all he proved was that the diet was crap, testers and non-testers alike both had A1c around 7.5.
Karter was paid by Kaiser Permanente to discover *whether or not* testing was cost effective, and proved that it was - and Kaiser are not exactly noted for wasting money on health.
