I don't know about you … but I think there have been more wasps around this summer, and they seem quite slow and dopey!
Oops perhaps I shouldn't have said that! One is now likely to sting me! But I hope not ...

Reading this article - perhaps my assumption that there are more is true.

"Wasp Swarms Could Worsen As Heatwave Prompts Shortage Of Leading Nest Killer
Stinging insects ready to 'attack' amid 'bumper year'.

Wasps could soon be allowed to swarm unchallenged as supplies of a leading nest killer run perilously low due to unprecedented demand.

German chemical giant Bayer confirmed supplies of Ficam D – a powdered insecticide used by professional pest controllers to treat an estimated 95% of wasp nests in Britain – have run out.

The company told HuffPost UK that “unprecedented... never-before-seen demand” led to the shortage as wasps enjoy a “bumper year” following months of hot weather.

Bob Guy, of Pest Control Direct, said his firm had received a month’s worth of Ficam D orders in a single day this week, in what he described as “an exceptional year for wasps.”

Supplies of Ficam D, which enables treatment without agitating nests, are only expected to be replenished in the UK by the end of September.

Experts warned that the situation could lead to nests growing to the size of beach balls as the insects become increasingly desperate to sustain themselves.
Natalie Bungay, of the British Pest Controller’s Association (BCPA), said that wasps were ready to “attack” those who go near them while nests balloon to as large as 30cm in diameter.

“Nests can get as large as 5,000 workers and can become the size of a beach ball,” Bungay, the association’s technical officer, said. “I’m predicting we are going to see some very large nests this year.”

“Stings are the main nuisance from nests. We know stings can cause anaphylactic shock in some people – one sting can kill you,” Bungay added.

“It is also the case that the more people are stung the more sensitive they can become.”

Bungay said that late August often sees wasp queens begin hibernation, which can leave adult worker wasps without direction. Wasps also become increasingly competitive for food as younger wasps grow into adults, their secretions become less nutritious to the elders.

Bob Guy, of Pest Control Direct, said the product is popular among professionals because it does not “excite” wasps during the treatment process, and other products can cause more disruption.

He added: “We normally serve domestic customers but recently we’ve seen huge interest from the trade.
“We can see that our suppliers have not been receiving stock from the manufacturer.” Some nests could now go untreated, he said.

Dr Julian Little, of Bayer’s UK crop division, said supplies of the particular type of insecticide were low across Europe and that it was working hard to find an alternative source.

Last week, the BCPA said controllers were destroying up to 12 nests a day. Technical officer Kevin Higgins confirmed wasp numbers were now “rising significantly, exceeding initial expectations” which means people have a greater chance of being stung."

I Jan, we have a wasps nest in a hole in the old part of our cottage. For a number of years wasps have tried to nest in a Victorian letter box in our house.
There seems to be more this year but don't know if it's generally so.

Over the last few years I've had three wasps nests two in the attic and one in in the space above the bay window, luckily I have pest controller who's efficient and inexpensive he charges at most £40 an if he needs to return it's free

Strange, I hadn't seen hardly any, or hornets, and was surprised to hear that someone down the road had had a nest. Someone in a nearby village said they had loads, and there was even an article on the local BBC News about how common they were.

Flies, on the other hand, have had something of a resurgence. I have two crawling around on my monitor and flying onto my face as I type.

It was a nice day today ideal for pottering in the garden and thankfully the wasps that were bothering over the last few days seem to have moved on though like Chris lots of flies around including a couple that were fornicating on the garden table  Shocked

Oh they do that! I remember when we visited my Aunt's farm they would spiral around under the light fitting and copulate on the wing - until they got stuck to the fly paper.

I have an extremely annoying biting house fly at the moment but fortunately not many wasps (yet)

Another sodding fly decided to commit suicide by jumping into my coffee.

No not really the kind of protein I want to eat, I had to throw it out and make another cup.

I am seeing more wasps recently. Someone had one land on her face and not realising what it was she whacked it and promptly got stung.

After a lull during the recent cool weather the wasps are back with a bang or should that be a buzz  Question it's only to be expected at this time of the year  Sad

I discovered where the latest tranche of flies came from. There's a huge manure pile about three fields away that hasn't been spread yet. I think it is (digested) human ordure.

A few more wasps but not that many compared to a few years back. Maybe it's all the sprays on the farmland where they grow all the vegan carbs and margarine.
