The watchdog figures come a decade after the 'Elephant Man' case in which six healthy young men were left in intensive care
Thousands of Brits have been left seriously ill or disabled after suffering “adverse reactions” when they agreed to test new medicines.
Shocking figures reveal for the first time the extent of serious and unexpected adverse reactions suffered by members of the public who take part in clinical trials.
Data released by the UK watchdog under Freedom of Information legislation shows 7,187 people suffered such reactions in the last five years.
Of these 493 reactions were immediately life-threatening and 197 resulted in “significant disability or incapacity”, according to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
The figures come almost a decade after a trial in which six healthy young men suffered devastating reactions, leaving them in intensive care.
The men were each paid £2,000 to take part in the trials at Northwick Park Hospital in London but, within minutes of being injected, their heads had swollen like balloons.

If like me you receive e-mail updates from DCUK no doubt you will have noticed the plugs for drug trials they of course get a commission for those that signup, given the dangers involved especially with the race by Big Pharma to get more diabetes drugs on the market I personally would not volunteer.
We of course do need trials or new drugs would not get off the ground but in the case of diabetes the race to market drugs solely to counteract the effects woeful dietary advice is not the best way forward.
