DUK Living with Diabetes Day - I'd like to be subversive Empty DUK Living with Diabetes Day - I'd like to be subversive

I've had an email from DUK inviting me along to a Living with Diabetes Day http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Global/get-involved/volunteering/Programme-%20final.pdf

I'd love to go along and spread the low carb message, as the flyer talks about healthy eating and fats.

Why have they arranged it for mid week? Many of the newly diagnosed are in their 40's and 50's and work.

I'm going to try and swap my day off, just to see what they are peddling and be a bit subversive.

I'd love to be a 'Fly on the wall' if you went along to the event!  Very Happy Reminds me of a thread at the 'Other forum' where a member had been invited to the DiabetesUK 'Tea party' and on looking at the food on offer there it was a total carb fest!! (As you would expect from DUK sadly  Evil or Very Mad ) so the member was tempted to go along and 'Ruffle a few feathers' about the appalling food on offer! I never did find out if the member ever attended it in the end but the thread was removed and I got a 2 week ban for my disgraceful and wicked use of the term ' +1 ' in the thread LOL!!

If I was attending and just for starters I'd print out a few copies of this page and hand them out.

Me too! I always hated the flavour of low fat spread in the past but I bought into the whole 'Margarine is better and healthier than butter' thing as it was the mainstream thinking when I was growing up! I LOVE butter and I cringe at all the wasted years we were apart! lol

Ewww Paul, that link about the making of margarine just turns my stomach. I was never a marg spreader on bread, but used to make cakes with marg. I'm also allergic to nickel.

I keep telling my friend (non-diabetic) that her low fat diet and cholesterol lowering spread is bad for her.

Definitely thinking about going to that day though.

That's a real eye opener. Thing is, I'm not too keen on the taste of butter to be honest. Any other alternatives ?

Thanks MUD, I'll try that. I do love bread with olive oil & balsamic vinegar. I think my only fear would be I usually take a sandwich for work which we make the night before. It would be soggy if I used olive oil for that. Is there a "better" version of marg or all the same ? We usually buy Olivio ?

Hi Mo! I don't know if this will work or not but I 'Believe' that extra virgin Olive oil-if kept in a plastic tub and kept cold enough will solidify and although it would be hard to spread when straight out of the fridge-after a few minutes it might be soft enough to spread-I'm sure I've read about someone doing something similar.
