It's quite amazing really; the basic idea is that the core purpose of insulin is in the regulation of glucagon not in the lowering of glucose in the body.
Mice who had no beta cells but had suppressed glucagon levels had normal blood sugar levels. That is normal blood sugar levels in the absence of insulin. Who would have thunk it eh?
Just think now that we have this knowledge it will only take 50 years until we get an appropriate treatment regime!
