    Good News! Empty Good News!

    Post by Douglas V Wed Jan 14 2015, 10:30

In  my last post I wrote about suspected cancer of the tongue. When I went to the initial visit to the hospital i was offered a chance to take part in a research project. This was a complete MRI, PET scanning and xrays. I went though the scannings and a day later the surgeon called me and said that the sore on my tongue was benign, but pre-cancerous. She recommended that I under go surgery on my tongue so  that it wouldn't turn cancerous later, but the scans showed that I hadn't a trace of cancer in my body.
I had the surgery yesterday and was allowed to return home today. Have a very sore tongue, It's been cut up and sewn on, so for the moment It's hard to eat anything solid.
The hospital staff insisted that I get a gulcose drop in a vein. I explained and explained that I followed a ketogenic diet and  that the glucose would really screw up my metabolism, but there was no dessuading them.  Also everything they offered me to eat was full of sugar, I ended up secretly dumping a lot of the food in the toliet. Even so my blood glucose went very high.

I'm profoundly relieved to be pronounced healthy and can get back to replacing my beard so that my family can reconise me.
I have a four month old granddaughter and surprisingly she never seemed to notice that I was suddenly beardless.
thank you for all of your kind support!  Douglas

Good to hear that Douglas, you must be very relieved.

Unfortunate about being put on a glucose drip though - what was their justification for it? I hope your BGs get back to normality soon.

Good News! Empty Reason for drip.

    Post by Douglas V Wed Jan 14 2015, 11:02

Their reasoning was that under a long surgury I might get hypoglycemia. I tried to explain about a ketogenic diet, and that there was no way I could get low blood glucose. Also the surgury ought to take about 30 minutes so the risk was even less.
My blood glucose is still very high today, but there's nothing to do except follow my low carb diet again and wait for my metobolism to return to ketosis.
The nurses and doctors hadn't a clue about what I was trying to explain about ketosis, but no doubt thought that I was a screwball. In the end I thought it best to shut my mouth and not to make more trouble.
I was the only man in the room to have an athletes body build, as I go in big for weight lifting, running, and a healthy carb free diet, so maybe they suspected I wasn't totally weird. Douglas

Great news Douglas, the lesson here I think If you have the slightest doubt about a medical situation is to get to a specialist ASAP. The high sugar junk diet seems to be par for the course in a NHS hospital. I once had a next door neighbour a man around 85 and a diet controlled type two diabetic for many years. He kept his BG numbers non diabetic until he went into hospital for a hip replacement. Average BG in hospital 18.

What is scary is the fact, the medics don't seem to realise a non insulin or powerful meds using type two, is far less likely to have a hypo than the non diabetic medics or any other non diabetic.

A good test for a diabetes medic is to ask them about Richard Bernstein, if they say wasn't he the guy that wrote West Side Story, you know where you stand.

Hope you heal up quickly and get back on solid nosh soon.

All the best Eddie and Jan
