    Serious problem Empty Serious problem

    Post by Douglas V Tue Jan 06 2015, 18:41

From about the first iof December I was aware of a sore on my tongue. finally got to my doctor at the end of December. He took a look at my tongue and said I needed a specialist. He got me an immediate appoitment with a nose, ear, throat specialist, who after looking at my tongue, got me a next day appointment with a hospital.
My treatment at the hospital was just excellent. They offered me a chance to take part in a research project which will envolve getting a MRI scan and a PET scan. I will get the scans tomorrow. A surgeon has looked at my tongue and says that it
appears to be cancer, I'll know tomorrow, but it was found very early and will be a simple surgery, with no chemo, or x-ray treatment.
The surgery will take place in a weeks time, the scans will tell if the cancer has spread.
I'm tightening up my ketogenic diet and taking steps to lower my blood glucose to as low as possible, hoping to starve the cancer cells out, or at least keep them from growing. Was told to remove my beard, I don't like what I look like now. My face has changed over the years without my being able to see what I looked like under the beard.

Oh Douglas, sorry to hear your news. That must have come as quite a shock to you. Yes I reckon you're right to do your best to cut out as many carbs as possible, that makes good sense to me.

All the best for next week then. I'll be thinking of you.

Douglas,as others have said I'm very sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis and hearing the word 'Cancer' from the consultant is like being hit in the stomach by a heavy goods vehicle leaving you numb, confused and totally winded from my own experience and I went through many stages emotionally at the time leading up to surgery but keeping hold of the 'I'm gonna kick this things arse' attitude and researching my condition pro-actively despite being secretly scared silly was the best thing for my mental state at the time and I firmly believe it helped in my recovery,as others have said,it's good that this has been picked up early and that surgical excision without radiotherapy or Chemo is the planned treatment at the moment as they alone can be worse than the surgery...It seems you have an excellent consultant/oncology team where you live so keep your faith in their expertise as they can and do work wonders and give you many more healthy and good years...My thoughts are with you and don't be a stranger.

    My best wishes

Sorry to read the post glad you got it in time. I agree with the tighten diet and up the fat, in the pet world Hills do a diet called ND for cancer pets it is VERY high fat as cancer thrives on (glucose) and insulin.

I know you do not need it but may be useful info as well...A friend who had cancer few years back was telling me about trials where insulin was being used with chemo as the cancer sucked in the insulin the yum yum food and it was pulling in the chemo in a very targeted attack.

@Douglas V - I know you've also commented on another thread (Good News I think it was called) but hope things are progressing well for you now.
Is your beard growing back, you seemed a little worried by that, although I don't think your grand-daughter worried too much.

Well, not so good news after all. I went to the hospital today for a consultation with the surgeon who operated on my tongue. She told me that tests on the tongue parts removed have cancer cells in it. So I'm to be operated on again this coming Thursday. Good part is that this was discovered very early and she thinks the operation will be simple and no more treatment will be needed.
I did start re-growing my beard and it has been growing quickly, but it has to come off again.
Spending some days in the hospital will mean putting up with all their sugar loaded food. I don't mind fasting a couple of days, but they'll give me a glucose solution drop again, which will ruin my ketosis. Was just getting my metabolism switched back to fat burning again.
Have had difficulty eating the last week because of pains in the mouth. The good part of that is that I lost a further two kilos. My poor wife thinks I'm wasting away, but I like my newer figure.

Thanks for your kind regards, Douglas
