When a professional changes his or her opinion as he/she refines his or her understanding, I have far more respect than for those who doggedly and blindly stick to theirs despite the evidence to the contrary. We had too much of that with the likes of Ancel Keys.
Sometimes they may be on the right lines but find, as new information becomes available, that they need to adjust their understandng.
That's no bad thing in my opinion.
At the end of the day, this young man recognises that carbs are bad. By adding fasting into the mix, he is taking it all one step further. There are many out there like me for whom low-carb high-fat just isn't working. Whilst eating more carbs isn't the answer, maybe we have to go back to how diabetes was treated before the advent of injectable insulin, with a relatively low calorie, low fat diet.
Whilst sugar metabolism is always going to be helped by radically lowering catbs, that doesn't always address the insulin resistance issue in some T2s.
It doesn't matter how low-carb I go, I cannot lose weight. Since I started fasting last Thursday evening, I have lost 4lbs. With eating relatively low calorie, and keeping my fats fairly low too, my body is being forced to burn its own fat.
There is some evidence that rogue visceral fat in the pancreas and liver may contribute to insulin resistance, so losing weight is imperative. If The only way I can acheive this is to go low carb AND low fat, then so be it.
