Hi just watching the telly this morning about doctors getting £55 to diagnose dementia, during the item it seems they also get paid extra to diagnose diabetes..... Why?

Re: Dementia payments
I'm not sure if they get paid just to diagnose but I'm pretty sure they receive "incentive payments" if their patients manage tight control. This explains why acceptable BG levels are so high and also why drugs are pushed at every opportunity. Have a look at this Andy:

Re: Dementia payments
My dentist wants £55 sheets to diagnose a tooth ache, where will it all end ? Mo, maybe you can get £55 for detecting a fire.

Re: Dementia payments
Dementia is one of the many diseases that is on the rise certainly in the 'western world' and probably in other regions too. It is the cruellest of diseases I have seen. When the person you love dearly does not recognise you, can not converse with you ...and this disease can go on for many years.
Money does need to be put into budgets for more research and in many areas for better care.
There are many good nurses and Drs who work tirelessly to look after their patients, many go 'beyond the call of duty' the extra hours that are sometimes needed, but proper and thorough training is imperative and needed, so that all carers know what to do and have the extra time often needed to look after dementia patients.
There is no easy answer to this and the thought that £55-00 is to be paid to each GP for what is 'doing their job' is not the answer.
The answer will not be easy because of course more money will be needed .....and where will it come from?
All the best Jan

Re: Dementia payments
Wonder if doctors also get paid for prescribing statins which for this chap led to the mis-diagnosis of rapidly progressive Alzheimer’s

Hi Andy that character turns up once a week, accuses people that right under their own names and with mug shots published as trolls, all the time using anonymous names and proxy servers. Undoubtedly the retard will be back, thems the breaks.

Re: Dementia payments
Just thought I'd share this; a very good friend of mine is a GP and I asked by e-mail how he is doing and this was his reply; "I'm OK, especially now we have diagnosed all our 12,000 patients as having dementia."
It's not just us who finds all this bizarre.

Now I'm getting cross. My Aunt's doctor says she doesn't have dementia (I'm not going into details, but she really does). Maybe he needs a new accountant.

As soon as anyone is given a cash incentive to push something, the results cannot be trusted.

Re: Dementia payments
Will they set up a 'do you have dementia' questionnaire for all their patients like they did with the 'depression' one?
Hmm. I wonder what some of the questions might be?
1. Do you lose your glasses/keys/purse/wallet/wife on a regular basis?
2. Do you forget to walk the dog/clean the car/put a shelf up/mend the dripping tap?
3. Is your recall of past events as good as it used to be?
4. Have you forgotten what you had for dinner on the 8th June 1963?
........

How about
1. Do you think Dr Hilary Jones performed well last night?
2. Do you think the admin and mods at the big one have a clue how to run a forum?
3. Do you consider a diet based on junk and pot noodles is a healthy diet?
4. Do you think 17 grams of cornflakes and a dash of skimmed milk is a good breakfast for an active diabetic?
Answering yes to any of the above clearly demonstrates a person if not completely demented is certainly deranged.

Oh, maybe my Aunt's OK after all. She can't remember much at all, but I'm pretty sure she would answer 'No' to all of those.
