    One of Britain’s most iconic birds, kingfishers have a special place in anglers' hearts. Considering there's only around 4,000 breeding pairs in the UK, I always deem it a privilege every time I see one in the river valley. They're also very busy hunters and have to consume 60 per cent of their body weight every day.

    Actually I think my monitor is finally on the way out, I realised it's about 14 years old, an Iiyama with a Mitsubishi tube, I should reprofile it but actually I think I'll replace it. Currently ogling Eizo and NEC

    Can't comment on the latest monitors Chris, haven't had a desktop PC for years much happier with my laptop. 

    Looking at the specs whichever you choose it will be far superior to your old monitor

    I'm a complete Mac iMac iPad iphone convert, I'll never buy another pc, they always slowly die 6 months after I buy it

    Usually get three to four years out of my laptops, as much as I'd love a Mac my OAP funds wont go that far  Crying or Very sad

    I'm a techno dinosaur ...

    Two of our sons love Mac, me anything that I can work once Eddie (or one of the kids) has explained it to me, and I'm happy.

    I'm the same with phones ... just need to make/receive a call and send/receive a text.
    The phone and similar companies do not get a lot of money from me!!!

    Anyway back to the weather ... the wind is howling ... think I'll have another cup of tea Smile

    Hi,
    For once today has been a glorious winter day in the Lakes. There is snow on the Fells and it looked thick on the more eastern fells particularly Helvellyn. We went into the Lakes after lunch and walked down to Abbots Bay from near Hugh Walpoles house..a peregrine flew past carrying prey when we were near Derwentwater. (this area appeared in the Star Wars new film).
    One nice day here makes up for a lot of rain.
    Water levels had been incredibly high in the floods..it was unbelievable seeing the flood debry lines.

    derek . your day makes me jealous . sounds very good . bad about the flood debry line though . think more snow to come in the uk . supermarket was selling snow shovels .

    Yes it took a while for LCDs to beat CRTs in the quality stakes, much like digital vs. film cameras, but they're there now.

    Problem is, like finishing building my new computer, replacing the dead disk in my fileserver and installing a switch to my router, it involves Going Under The Desk, the haunt of dust bunnies and things with more legs than are good for them.

    We've had a series of good days, I got a few loads of laundry out and air dried and went for some excellent walks.

    Continuing bizarreness though, I have a load of species crocuses which usually vary from early to very early, and the hybrids generally follow them into flower. this year the hybrids are coming out first.

    Also muscari. Years ago a neighbour was pulling out hordes of muscari. I asked if I could have some. Now when I see her I ask if she wants any back - the damn things are taking over some of my tubs and half the garden.

    Masses of primroses now erupting from the road verges and field ditches. No wild coltsfoot yet but some of the garden ones are flowering already.

    They look good planted under the daffs but yes they need constant editing. I have a few oddball species which are less invasive. Did you notice that like snowdrops they have a pleasant scent?

    There is a little story behind that picture above, I have not got a clue where we were when I took that image. Jan and myself wanted to get right off the beaten track, but it was far too hot to go walking up mountains midday for a couple of old crocks. Driving down a road I saw a sign saying Forestry Commission Only. It was a very rough track just wide enough for a car. I started driving up the track going higher and higher in awe of the fantastic views, but hoping not to destroy the wheels on our car. The tyres are very low profile, like rubber bands easily wrecked. When we got to almost the top of the mountain we met some Forestry guys. I stopped and asked them if I carried on would we eventually go down to a main road and could I do it without wrecking ourselves and the car. A guy said if you have got it this far up, you should be OK getting down again. Looking back I must have been nuts, no change there then.
