Statins: Heart disease drug speeds up ageing process, warns new research

STATINS make regular users become older faster, leaving them open to long-term mental and physical decline, according to disturbing new research.

Scientists have found the heart disease drug badly affects our stem cells, the internal medical system which repairs damage to our bodies and protects us from muscle and joint pain as well as memory loss. 

Last night experts warned patients to “think very carefully” before taking statins as a preventative medicine.
 
A GP expert in the field said: “They just make many patients feel years older. Side effects mimic the ageing process.” 

The new research by scientists at Tulane University in New Orleans has reignited the debate about statin side effects which many doctors say have been played down.
 
They include memory loss, muscle pain, diabetes, cataracts, liver dysfunction, diabetes, fatigue and memory loss.

Stephanie Seneff wrote about this in 2011 and came to the very same conclusion. When I read her paper on the subject I bailed out of statins. They had already done some damage by then though.

I had big problems with statins I had many side effects, fortunately unlike you I did not suffer any problems after coming off them. It was only after many trips to the docs and hospitals without anything being resolved that I turned to good old Dr Google and spacedoc was one of the sites I visited, stopped the statins and within days my night sweats, vivid dreams and brain fog had gone took a bit longer for the muscular aches to abate though

I'm now on record as intolerant to them

The good news Chris is they are very expensive and with the constraints on the NHS budgets I think there use will be limited.

I hope you're right.

After my LDL came right down as a result of hyperthyroid (NOT recommended!) they tried to make me go back on statins "to stabilise my plaque".

I'm in the fortunate minority in that they reduce my LDL without doing anything else, but having nailed my HDL and trigs I don't really care about my LDL, and I'm not sure I want to "stabilise" my plaque as it appears to be going away now I've got my thyroid back in line and my BP back down (drugs are OK when they're necessary, just not as an antidote to a crap diet).

I saw a study recently where statins were associated with heart FAILURE so this may be another reason why although they may reduce "cholesterol" they don't improve longevity much.

I did notice on the other forum another member was reporting that his cholesterol blood test only included HDL and TC, no LDL or trigs. With me and Baruney that's three of us now, wonder if the guidelines are being changed and the LDL targets are being abandoned same as the AHA.

Oh yes, our nurses only do total cholesterol and a "ratio", you have to waylay a doctor to get the full panel. I suspect as the nurse told me "we don't test your cholesterol again once you're one your statin", plus they expect trigs to be high if you're eating a low fat diet so its not worth testing.

In fact I read of someone elsewhere who was told they would get no further treatment unless they agreed to go back to a low fat diet "and we can tell if you're complying as your trigs will go back up!" WHAT???
