    Mashed Question Empty Mashed Question

Post by Mud Island Dweller Thu Sep 04 2014, 21:43

Have noticed that when l eat l could use the term "mashed" foods l go high. l know the theory etc about glucose being loose but this applies to things like the 3g/100g yogurt or corobation chicken spread or cottage cheese each with 3g/100 carbs pasted on the packet and even then l only eat part of the carton 100g lasts 2 or 3 days

Hub did a stew yesterday with mashed celariac and l did pig out with 2 large helpings but l squeezed in 2hrs later at 6.1 started at 5.5

Tonight had 1 helping of the stew and about 45mins ago a half a mug of hot milk bloods 6.9 so retested other hand 6.6 redid 3rd test on first hand different finger 6.6 bit happier but only by a slight margin

So l guess my reaction means l am less suseptable to insulin in other words more insulin resistant and need to be more careful...is that the correct way or am l confusing myself more by thinking?

Well whatever happens looks like a lot of water down my throat tonight and told hub no more mashed caleriac....or anything :-(

Do you know what your BG was before the last meal ?  TBH I don't know what milk bloods are could they have had an impact, as for celeriac  I would not give it up based on a single result. Having said that a reading of 6.6 after only 45 mins is not bad going.

Not being a diabetic myself perhaps I'm not 'qualified' to comment. I can only say that diabetics I know eat celeriac sometimes mashed, sometimes roasted and it is a low carb vegetable. You may find your blood sugar numbers are better if you roast the celeriac? Just a thought.

Also a mug of warmed or hot milk may affect blood sugars.

The other thought is, reading your other thread, you are at the moment experiencing discomfort with your ankle - if there is inflammation this may also affect your blood sugar numbers.

I'm sure some of the other members who are diabetic will be along to comment, but as Graham says perhaps "a reading of 6.6 after only 45 minutes is not too bad"

How are your blood sugars at the moment ?

No that was 2 hours after the meal l took my bloods the milk was 45mins before the 2hrs were up.

We often have celariac and it never affects me like that it is just mashed l seem to have a problem. Lunch l have forgotten most of the week to do post meal bloods so blimming busy at the place l am at l will try again today but pre are generally nice and low.

And post l am usually mid 5s but throw anything "mashed" or fine at me and wham up l go. I have berries and cream for lunch each day and am always fine but give me the low carb yoghurt and up l go. and that's the 3g/100 carb stuff (used to get it from lidl can not remember exact amount but it was low) and of that l only have around 40/50gram weight in a separate pot a day so a large pot lasted me ages... well for me high l generally end up on mashed type foods at 6.2 or just above 6. On a normal meal it is mid 5s

Well it's a bit of a conundrum .....don't really know why mashed celeriac should be a little more of a problem with your blood sugar numbers. Although it is true that some vegetables when cooked can and do have different effects. The good thing is you are aware of this and can do something about it.

I tend to eat my celeriac roasted .....but I just love mashed swede, using quite a lot of butter to mash it up with. Do you know what effect swede when mashed with butter has on your numbers?

No good idea will ask hub to get some swede. Not a major problem it is just puzzling me l can live without mash and do love roast celariac but food that is already low carb and l am going high that's the confusion
