I mentioned a while ago about my daughter having ogtt etc etc we got the results over the phone, they said all tests are normal except.... Her insulin level is 1085, when my 11 yr old was diagnosed with hyperinsulinism etc at 2 yrs old, her insulin level was 181, which sounds pretty scared to me, anyone have a clue about this stuff please?

Re: Question about my daughter
Hi Andy ....good to hear from you.
I just wish I could come up with a definitive answer to your question, regarding your daughter's test results. Unfortunately I can't, but hopefully someone may be able to offer advice / help.
Just wondered how your daughter has been since undergoing these tests?
Have you got a follow up appointment to discuss these results?
All the best Jan

Re: Question about my daughter
Cheers mate, both me and the wife are busy trying to google it without any luck, she sees the doc on the 29th instead of March so I guess they are concerned, just seems to me that if 181 is enough for a diagnosis what the hell does 1085 mean her bg was fine

Re: Question about my daughter
Sorry for answering in reverse order, than you Jan! She's fine in herself, we are happy all other tests normal pituitary tests etc, it's just this number that worries us, we do wonder if she's had it since birth like our littlen but she's fat and this one if thin, which is weird in itself as insulin is the fat carrying gene

Hi Andy, I know it must be a worrying time for you but I don't think anyone here can answer your question mate, your daughters doctor will provide you with more information on the 29th till then just keep an eye on her.

Re: Question about my daughter
Hi Andy, I've been trying to Google it too but can't find any specific numbers. It seems that the signs include regular hypo's as she produces too much insulin ? Has she had this ? Sorry to hear though mate, never nice when your kids are involved. Hope you get the results quickly and treatment, if any, can begin. Take care mate !

Re: Question about my daughter
Hi Andy. It sounds as though it could be hyperinsulinemia. Elevated levels of insulin in the body usually associated with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance.
Whilst it is usually tied in with overweight issues, not all type 2 diabetics are overweight. Some actually have difficulty gaining weight.
Does your daughter tend to get hypos? Get irritable? Fatigued?
With me, although weight gain was an issue since I was a teenager, I used to get awful hypos. I would get the shakes when my blood sugar dropped too low. Sometimes I would lie awake imagining the most awful things happening to me or my family, but if I got up and went and had something to eat, It would stop and I would go straight off to sleep with no problem.
Because of the hypos I obviously had the beginnings of metabolic syndrome from quite a young age. It didn't develop into full blown diabetes until I was 40. If I'd known back then what I know now, I would have done things very differently.
This may have to be a wake-up call for your daughter. At the end of the day, the food that drives insulin resistance and diabetes is not doing anyone any favours. If she can have the strength of character to jump off the high-carb, high-sugar bandwagon, she will be ahead of the game. Her friends might think they can eat it and get away with it, but judging how much of an epidemic diabetes is becoming, there won't be many who will escape its clutches sooner or later if they don't change their ways.
People always think they are invincible - until they discover they're not, and the damage is done......

Re: Question about my daughter
Thankyou all
i really can't imagine her taking any notice of me regarding what she eats, I've tried so hard to get them on the low carb path with zero success, if she does turn out to need a special diet (who dosent) i will try again, i call her my cave dweller as i see her for 5 minutes a day even on sundays when I'm at home, listening to anything dad has to say is only useful when she needs help with homework but these days i can only help with the craft homework, everything else is way over my head i guess we will wait and see what the doc says, the trouble with that theory is i have absolutely no confidence in my doctors so ill get as much info as possible and try to check what they say with google... and you of course lol x

Re: Question about my daughter
Wise advice with the doc mate. Start making a list of questions now cos otherwise you'll forget something. Ask for copies of test results etc if poss or write them down. It's sensible to accept a doctors advice initially but Google is a powerful tool with so much info, you can check everything out yourself. Are there any forums for this ?
Good to hear you've got your family on the fitness bug mate. Take care, Mo

I'll second that
Do you and the family have a Wii U or whatever they are called. Apparently you can get some good dance or fitness games / music that are fun for the family to do - Wii Fit U or the Just Dance 2015 .....just a thought.
All the best Jan

Went to doctor today, all tests are fine except she has hyperinsulinism, same as the little one
She has been put on Metformin
The doctor said to the wife...
"it must be a family thing, it has nothing to do with her genetics"
Which fillllls me with confidence lol

Re: Question about my daughter
Well, I suppose at least it's something you already know about and know how to deal with, not some horrid new problem as well. I'm sorry both of your daughters have it though, especially as it's not to do with their genetics !!

Re: Question about my daughter
I'm sorry all the doctor would do is shove Metformin at her. That's doing her no favours. If he'd frowned at her and told her to cut her carbs or she wll end up diabetic like her Dad, he would have been a far better doctor.
metformin might bring the insulin levels down, but it wouldn't stop the diabetes progression. Eventually her cells will rebel and resist.
Why oh why do they think everything can be solved with a pill!
