Bariatric Surgery. Advised to eat more carbs Empty Bariatric Surgery. Advised to eat more carbs

Post by skinnydipper Sun Sep 06 2015, 11:26

I was talking to a relative who had bariatric surgery earlier this year and I said how important it must be to ensure that every mouthful counts nutrition wise. She knows I low carb and told me that at her last review following surgery the team advised her to eat more carbohydrate, that half a baked potato was not enough. I said no more.

This team are advising people who struggle with their weight and have had to resort to surgery in attempt to regain health. Is it me? banghead

Wow! That's pretty bad! Crying or Very sad Surely these 'experts' should know that starchy, beige carb laden foods are not much better than cardboard in terms of nutritional value and advising a patient with a stomach that is now the size of a small orange to base most of their daily diet on things like jacket spuds etc is a recipe for that person to develop some serious deficiencies! I'm with you on this-Every mouthful should count nutritionally in these situations.

I think bariatric surgery is the work of Beelzebub. If you think about it, the so called diabetes cure or reversal of the main and most dangerous type two symptom, high blood glucose numbers, is achieved with a low carb diet. Fasting has the same effect i.e. a severe calorie restriction. In other words it's not the surgery that causes the effect, it's a change in diet. Albeit forced upon the poor patient. That being said there are ways for these people to get around the system, I have heard of these people liquidising food so than can still carry on binging. The bottom line there is no easy answer no quick fix, nothing in life worth having was ever easy. It's work, work and more work if you want to be successful.

Check this out what an earner eh !

"The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery state that the number of weight loss surgeries in the US increased from 13,000 in 1998 to over 200,000 in 2008. Reasons for undergoing weight loss surgery can range from health needs to the desire for a confidence boost. But new research suggests that although the surgery may make people happy in some ways, it can also cause problems."

Whereas when my daughter had sleep issues the sleep 'Experts' advised us to give her a slice of wholemeal toast and a banana before bed as the carbs would help her fall to sleep naturally! Shocked

There may be a slither of truth in that, that sort of nosh sends me to to sleep on the rare occurrences I indulge in a carb blow out. And why are these medics and dietitians etc. so taken in by wholemeal bread, almost all bread is junk these days churned out using the dreaded Chorleywood method.

I don't think that surgery is the answer. I know someone else who had bariatric surgery a couple of years ago. We now have a surgeon at our local hospital who specialises in it.

I will call this person John (his real name). Initially after surgery John lost several stones . He continued to eat his preferred diet of chocolate and icecream, this made him feel very ill but he persevered. John has now regained much of the weight and it has been suggested that he have a balloon fitted in the remaining stomach.

John has had T2 for over 20 years, has angina, had a heart attack and stent, pain/numbness in his foot and knee replacement

When I was diagnosed T2 he assured me I would be fine, he had had it for over 20 years and had no problems from it. (what?)

Sadly John is not the only one I've read reports of others who among other things have liquidised mars bars  Crying or Very sad Bariatric surgery is not the answer for those who can't curb their food cravings.
