Statins and your calcium score

I have plenty of heart problems and have never had a calcium score. Maybe it doesnt matter , see here.

Yes I read about this on someone's blog recently.

This was the only house we looked at that didn't have a water softener. The pipes were so calcified that water flow and the drains were let's say somewhat compromised, and the water tank was pretty much a solid block of concrete with a small space for water left at the top.

Not good, and rather expensive. Now we have a water softener.

The equivalent of a water softener for the human circulation is of course a low carb diet, which prevents the damage that causes the buildup of plaque in the first place.

I had a calcium test about a year ago. I asked for one. It was exactly midway in the 'normal' section.

Isn't it good when that happens?

Yes it is. Unfortunately not all of my tests are like that, but they are improving.

Keep at it, you'll get all your ducks in a row eventually. Probably you'll have some outliers though, my thyroid is still not completely back to normal and my LDL is high enough to scare doctors, but not me.

I was hoping no-one would ask. It's a long story. I was depressed and asked for a vitamin D test because I had been on a drug (amiodarone) which meant I had to keep out of the sun as much as possible because I burned easily whilst taking the drug. I wanted to check my vit D level before taking anti-depressants. My GP said he would do a calcium test too, which made sense to me since the 2 are linked. I never got any results for a vit D one though. Presumably because my calcium was spot on he assumed my vit D was OK?

So a friend gave me details of a vit D test you could send off for from home (£28) and I have had that one done recently. It turns out I do have an insufficiency in vit D which is only 1 point off being a deficiency. So if I had had this done when I asked I may not have needed these damn citalopram tablets. Still they helped me through a tough time and I am on half the dose now.

I am self dosing with a vit D spray (with vit K2 too) and will get retested later on to see how I am doing.

The heart scan's different from a blood calcium test though.

William Davis is a believer in them, he used to have a blog called Heartscan, some of which has now become subscription only and some of which has been transferred here

It's the sort of thing you're unlikely to get on the NHS though.

Yes it is, as I said it was the vit D I was really after.

As far as the heart goes, it has been looked at from the inside when I had a catheter ablation as have the main arteries. That's good enough for me.

Vitamin D appears to be a major player in metabolism in general, pity it's not taken more seriously by the NHS, it can be difficult to impossible to get it tested. Then if you do have a deficiency they may prescribe D2 when D3 especially in oil-based capsules is preferable.

I haven't been keepig up with his recent stuff but William Davis (a cardiologist) used to treat his patients to hdl, ldl, trigs and vitamin D3 of 60 - 60 - 60 - 60 in US numbers. He would start by eliminating wheat, reducing carbs and working from there.
