NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP

Preventing Type 2 diabetes in England

Most people would be shocked to know that around 22,000 people with diabetes die early every year. Type 2 diabetes is a leading cause of preventable sight loss in people of working age and is a major contributor to kidney failure, heart attack, and stroke. As well as the human cost, diabetes treatment currently accounts for around 10 per cent of the annual NHS budget. This is nearly £10 billion a year.

If current trends persist, one in three people will be obese by 2034 and one in ten will develop Type 2 diabetes. However, evidence exists which shows that many cases of Type 2 diabetes are preventable.  There is also strong international evidence which demonstrates how behavioural interventions, which support people to maintain a healthy weight and be more active, can significantly reduce the risk of developing the condition. The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme will aim to identify those at high risk and refer them into an evidence-based behavioural intervention to help them reduce their risk.

    About the NHS DPP

The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme is a joint commitment from NHS England, Public Health England and Diabetes UK, to deliver at scale, an evidence based behavioural programme to support people to reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The NHS DPP has undertaken a review of the available evidence from existing diabetes prevention programmes. This will be published, following peer review, in the summer.  The evidence review has informed the development of a core components framework for the programme intervention. An Expert Reference Group has reviewed and endorsed the intervention core components. We have also established a User Involvement Group, in order to ensure the programme takes into account the views of those at risk of Type 2 diabetes.

I'll save them all that money! I already know what the report will say, eat a high carb diet, avoid sugar and (saturated) fat and lose weight.

There! Now give me all the money and I'll put it towards some proper research, like an RCT of Test Test Test and Paleo/low carb diets.

Yes they will say exactly that Chris! They will tell people to lose weight but not tell them that the best way to lose weight and keep it off is by reducing their consumption of carbs. Then the blame goes back onto the patients because they "won't try to lose weight". Tell them how for God's sake! This makes me so angry. Evil or Very Mad

    [crystal ball]
At some point in the future:

Genes related to T2 susceptibility identified
Routine DNA tests on all children to see what dormant conditions they might carry
Proper regular screening of BG, insulin levels and OGT for those at risk
Proper education on diet for those at risk to minimise onset of prediabetes and T2
Proper education for population as a whole on diet
Stamp on business models of BigPharma and BigFood so that they can make reasonable profits for the right reasons.
    [/crystal ball]

Oh well, maybe not in my lifetime.  Matron, more coffee over here please! ...
