Exercise Alone Does Not Help in Losing Weight Empty Exercise Alone Does Not Help in Losing Weight

Newswise — MAYWOOD, Ill. – Physical activity has many health benefits, ranging from reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer to improving mental health and mood

But contrary to common belief, exercise does not help you lose weight, according to public health scientists Richard S. Cooper, MD and Amy Luke, PhD of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

“Physical activity is crucially important for improving overall health and fitness levels, but there is limited evidence to suggest that it can blunt the surge in obesity,” Drs. Luke and Cooper wrote in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

Drs. Cooper and Luke have been studying the link between physical activity and obesity for years. When they started their research, they assumed that physical activity would prove key to losing weight. But the preponderance of evidence has shown that assumption to be wrong.

If you increase your activity, your appetite increases and you compensate by eating more food. So with or without increasing physical activity, calorie control remains key to losing or maintaining weight.

“This crucial part of the public health message is not appreciated in recommendations to be more active, walk up stairs and eat more fruits and vegetables,” Drs. Cooper and Luke said. “The prescription needs to be precise: There is only one effective way to lose weight – eat fewer calories.”

Dr. Cooper is a professor and chair and Dr. Luke is a professor and vice chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

The food and beverage industry has tried to divert attention from calorie consumption by promoting the theory that lack of physical exercise is a major cause of obesity. For example, the New York Times recently reported that Coca-Cola, the world’s largest producer of sugary beverages, “is backing a new ‘science-based’ solution to the obesity crisis: To maintain a healthy weight, get more exercise and worry less about cutting calories.”

In the International Journal of Epidemiology, Drs. Luke and Cooper detailed the evidence that physical activity is not key to losing weight. Here are some examples:

    • It’s often argued that low obesity rates in Africa, India and China are due in part to strenuous daily work routines. But the evidence does not support this notion. For example, African Americans tend to weigh more than Nigerians. But studies by Dr. Luke and colleagues found that when corrected for body size, Nigerians do not burn more calories through physical activity than African Americans.
    • Numerous clinical trials have found that exercise plus calorie restriction achieves virtually the same weight loss as calorie restriction alone.
    • Observational studies show no association between energy expenditure and subsequent weight change.
    • Extremely small proportions of the U.S. population engage in levels of energy expenditure at a sufficiently high level to affect long-term energy balance.

Since their International Journal of Epidemiology paper was published in 2013, evidence has mounted that physical activity does not influence obesity risk, Drs. Cooper and Luke said.

“While physical activity has many benefits, multiple lines of evidence lead to the conclusion that an increase in physical activity is offset by an increase in calorie intake, unless conscious effort is made to limit that compensatory response,” they said.

Just to thank Yoly for digging up these studies which prove common sense is not yet entirely dead.

At last a study to support what many of us already knew! I found that even when I did count calories so that I didn't increase the amount I ate, exercise still didn't help with weight loss.

There's an old saying that you never find obese people at the top of a mountain, the implication being they are too lazy.

In fact I believe it works the other way round, you become lazy because you became obese and have little choice.

All the while I was dutifully low-fatting I would have to take supplies and eat every couple of hours whenever I went on a long walk.

When I went even lower fat and higher carb I was far too exhausted to do ANYTHING much, which was the only time I actually put on weight.

Once I started low carbing all my energy came back.

When I was truly obese you would never have found me at the FOOT of a mountain either; in fact you'd be lucky to find me within a mile of a mountain! No

When I was s young,,,, Well that's a different story.

Exercise is great for general fitness and strength, it can also bring those BG numbers down, as a weight losing tool, pretty useless. Sure ultra intense exercise will shed a lot of weight quickly, that's how boxers can loose pounds in a day, but mostly water and very quickly regained.

Walking and swimming are great for keeping pretty fit and doing at your own pace won't cause any problems for most. Anything that keeps us moving like housework or gardening is also cool.

Mark Sisson (Mark's Daily Apple) had it about right - move slowly a lot, run very fast occasionally, lift heavy things. Pretty much what we evolved to do.

Absolutely Chris. In different company though we would be regarded as cranks. Even though the obvious is as apparent as a nose-wart

It all harps back to my own belief. If we eat the right kinds of foods we won't become obese. Wild animals don't need to 'diet'. They eat what they should, and laze around between meals. They can 'get away' with that, simply because they eat the right foods.

How can anyone deny what is evident in front of their eyes? Processed foods are just NOT what we should be eating.  We will be fine on fresh produce, prepared at home, and enjoyed. For exercise, just what Chris suggests. My only regret is I didn't latch on to this twenty years ago!  Mad

... now I enjoy a walk it's a lovely form of exercise and doesn't cost anything.
But if going out this colder weather I would advise plenty of layers, a coat, a scarf, a hat and gloves ....

Then a nice warming cup of tea or bowl of soup on return !

    All the best Jan

The further away we get from what we evolved to eat - and do - the more we switch on genes that were probably adaptive when used occasionally but not when continually engaged. Modern diets switch on "food storage" but then the winter never comes and we never get to burn the stored food, we just store more. Then we go and do prolonged "cardio" which leaves us so hungry we go face down in the carbs to recover. Plus increases inflammation and damages joints etc.

Probably the most effective exercise is HIIT - work VERY hard for brief periods with rest intervals in between - but be careful when starting that you don't overload anything. I used to do a version of that I called "Tabata walking" where I'd walk as fast as possible, stop to chat to a neighbour, walk, stop to pet a cat or go in a shop . . .

It was interesting to see Dr Rangan Chatterjee talking of HIIT in last Thursday's Doctor in the House programme ... and this HIIT does not need to be complicated.
Watch the episode if you haven't already seen it - very interesting. Smile

    All the best Jan
