Over at the flog a thread has been running a few days "Low carb, IF, increased insulin resistance?! Help!" Noblehead a forum Mod and low carb anti was quick to wade in with "Some type 1's do become insulin resistant when going very low-carb, seen a few posts on the forum over the years discussing this very subject"
Now, in fairness to Noblehead, it may well be some type one diabetics become more insulin resistant by going low carb, but I reckon this is not the main reason for type ones becoming insulin resistant. Although type one and type two diabetics have some similarities, in some ways they are very different. The majority of type two diabetics at some stage produce far too much insulin, they almost become immune to insulin. We all know heavy drinkers that can drink all night and never appear to get drunk, while the occasional drinker would be flat on the floor after a fraction of the booze consumed by the heavy drinker. This is because the heavy drinker has become almost immune to the booze, they have built up a very high tolerance.
The same goes for insulin for type ones. A high carb diet requires a lot of insulin to control BG numbers, and over time they also become more and more immune to insulin. There is a term called double diabetes, this is where the type one takes on all the metabolic grief of a type two diabetic and is very hard to control. So many times we see clearly illustrated, insulin is not a get out of jail free card, for a high carb junk food diet.
