Anyone see this story in the Telegraph?

"Liam Scholes said to have been banned from posing for class photograph after dressing as Christian Grey from explicit book and carrying cable ties" link to story here. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/11453788/Fifty-Shades-of-Grey-costume-gets-boy-barred-from-World-Book-Day.html

That lad got away light, they wouldn't let one of my grandsons through the school gates, can't think why!

I'm all for promoting books and encouraging all children (and parents) to enjoy reading.

Unfortunately it would appear some of the supermarkets, clothing retailers etc are also taking part in World Book Day offering costumes for sale. What with Comic Relief Day this Friday 13th March (again for a good cause) it's no wonder many parents have empty pockets.

I know all firms need to encourage us to spend but whatever happened to good old fashioned dressing up .... made with odd bits of materials, tea towels, card etc.

Oh yes, sorry everybody it's now 2015, and modern families don't have time for this - back in the 'olden days' my dear mum would have had her bits of material out making costumes but these days with so many families with two parents working and no sewing machine (or thread) in the house it's a quick rush down to the nearest supermarket.

Somewhere along the line do you think values have gone astray here ....... Question

Yes Jan. I used to make costumes for my kids too. A snowman, a Babar, a Woody and a lion are some that I remember. I hated doing it, but they were my kids.

The other good thing was that all kids were more equal ..... there were no parents spending more than others.... and kids these days do (unfortunately ) seem to notice this - shame  Crying or Very sad

Keeping up with 'The Jones' is not always for the better ......

Yes I agree with you. I used to keep loads of old clothes/sheets etc. 'just in case' I needed to make something for them. It was a relief to get rid of that lot when they left school! Smile

I know that 'just in case' feeling.

A good friend of mine still has 'trunk-loads' of odds and ends of materials she's saving up for her grandchildren 'just in case' ...... only trouble is she feels that's still some years away.

But back to 'World Books Day' I do hope it encourages more children to sit down with a book - or comic, it is a priviledge, that in this country, we are allowed to read and learn about so many subjects, so many different experiences that sometimes we can take this freedom, this choice too much for granted.

Hmmm I had to smile when I read your comment about encouraging children to read. When my eldest was 5, I made him a snowman costume out of two old white jumpers. He asked me if he could read to me and I said "Not just yet, I haven't finished your costume for school" Embarassed
