As I have only ever been a lurker and never a poster I am not sure whether this will actually work. I was really pleased to see that this forum had started. I have always been a bit wary of posting on forums before but here goes. I was diagnosed back in 2009 and for the first few years didn't take a lot of notice. Then I found the other forum and a few other sites such as low carb diabetic - yes I have been watching this for a while - good recipes and love the posts. It made me realise that low carb was the way to go. I have read Gary Taubes, Barry Groves, Bernstein but what really started me thinking about it all was a book by Charles Clark - The diabetes revolution. I was trying to lose weight by going to weightwatchers and the gym but wasn't losing anything. I had been to the initial talk for diabetics run by dorset health whatever and quite frankly -what a waste of time. It was what I had been teaching my Year 3 children for the last I don't know how many years. At the time I thought that was right - the eatwell plate, plenty of carbs, no fat etc, etc. Having done all the research and followed the forums I realise I was wrong. I try really hard to keep my carbs down but don't get a lot of support. My husband's mantra is " a little bit of what you fancy". Well if I followed that I'd be eating Cadburys Dairy Milk and pasta and probably pizza all day long! We have just come back from France and to be honest I did find it difficult over there- their bread and croissants are so good and so is their wine!! Anyway back to normal this week and have been working really hard to get my levels down. Today I had my first 6 which is good for me. I am trying to keep the carb levels down and fit in a bit more exercise. I have COPD so that limits me a bit. I can walk on the flat but uphill is so difficult. I am lucky I suppose in that I live on the south coast and am omly 5 minutes from the sea. So walks up on the cliff top are fine. Anyway hope to post some more and hopefully get some virtual support.

Re: Hi, I decided to post
Hi Janlyn
The warmest of welcomes to our fledgling forum, as you can see it is very new, but between us we have a vast experience of controlling diabetes, weight and knowledge of a healthy real food diet. You said "I have read Gary Taubes, Barry Groves, Bernstein but what really started me thinking about it all was a book by Charles Clark" follow these guys and you will not go wrong, they are my guru's.
I hope to hear lot's from you, but in the meantime, the very best of luck and health to you and yours.
Kind regards Eddie

Hello and welcome in. I'm sure you'll pick up lots of useful tips from here - if not you can always laugh at the tangents threads seem to take once folk get to know one another.
