So, a study has suggested weight loss surgery decreases the risk of diabetes !! Do you think this is the right message ? What are your thoughts on this ?

It's a completely wrong message, in my view. I'm very wary of anything in medicine, which is to "reduce the risk of ….." . There are always side effects, there is always cost and results are just a possibility somewhere down the line.
If only "they" would turn round the low fat, high carb dietary advice, which has made so many of us over weight and diabetic, so much illness and money could be saved, without need for daily pills and operations.
Perhaps everyone on statins should be eligible for bariatric surgery. Now, how many millions would that make for somebody?

And think about the costs involved ! Not sure how much bariatric surgery is but not cheap I'm guessing. Surely this should be a drastic, last resort ? Education must be the way forward, start with the dieticians, docs and DSN's. The evidence is overwhelming, it works, simple. The money saved could then be spent issuing BG meters and strips to all.

Not cost effective at all to an already ailing NHS

    My bold and italics...

"Depending on the complexity of the procedure and the care required after surgery, NHS England says bariatric surgery costs can vary between £3,000 and £11,505."

Taken from this article earlier this year

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-25766253

So adding the above costs to the real risks of post operative complications then it's certainly NOT the answer and education is key and I suspect the majority of us here know what the answer is and I suspect many HCP's do too but have to follow the current guidelines in order to keep their jobs, plus we also have the 'Elephant in the room' with the loss of revenue to the junk food and Pharma industry, slimmer and healthier people with good diabetic control aren't very lucrative!

Bariatric surgery is another great con, not so long ago we heard it was the great cure for many, but then we heard for many within a year the symptoms had returned. This is all pretty logical when you think about it, because what this procedure does is bring about for some an enforced state of permanent fasting, which in turn brings about reduced BG numbers. It ain't rocket science.

As for why the low carb high fat method is not widely recommended and the what's cost effective argument. It's not cost effective for big pharma and medical institutions all over the world. Countless $billions are earned dealing with diabetics in many countries especially the US.

As we know what goes down in the US, such as the food pyramid etc. has been copied here. With the almost inevitable privatisation of the NHS the vultures are rubbing their grubby hands looking forward to the mega cash deals that will soon be rolling in. As a single health condition, diabetes is the biggest medical earner in the world, and set to become infinity bigger. As always follow the money.
