by Kenneth Carpenter, a series of four articles. I found these long ago and they are really fascinating. It would be good to bring the story up to date but I suspect it will take a damn sight more than four papers to do that.

    Episode 1 1785–1885

    Part 2 (1885–1912)

    https://academic.oup.com/jn/article/133/4/975/4688168

    Part 3 (1912–1944)

    https://academic.oup.com/jn/article/133/10/3023/4687555

    Part 4 (1945–1985)

Sadly there won't be any more

Thanks for these Chris, which I must have missed when you posted a few weeks ago.
Fascinating reads ... and Kenneth Carpenter lived to a very good age ... he died aged 93.

    All the best Jan
