Are We Overdoing Salt Restrictions? Empty Are We Overdoing Salt Restrictions?

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 13, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- It's long been known that eating too much salt will raise your blood pressure, but a comprehensive global study now says that too little salt in your diet also can harm your heart health.

I used to buy into this whole 'Cut out the salt' advice and even used to buy the reduced sodium 'Franken seasoning' LO salt brand but I then over time-I developed really bad calf muscle cramps-didn't know why until it was suggested to me to go ahead and enjoy using real salt in my cooking to combat this and after a while it worked and my cramps went away-so my thoughts are that considering the heart itself is a muscle then not having enough sodium in our system can't be doing it much good if my leg cramps were anything to go by so I don't fear salt at all now-it's the chips that I used to put it on in the past that were the danger. affraid

Some words from Dr. Jay Wortman a lowcarb expert and type two diabetic, a man who has helped me and who I am proud to have as a friend. On lowcarb and salt.

“When you cut the carbs your kidneys will release sodium. This is why people lose some water initially and why blood pressure also tends to get better on low-carb. If you are not careful to replace the lost sodium sufficiently by adding salt to your food, you will experience the effects of mild hypo-natremia. These are: headache, constipation, weakness, fatigue, low-blood pressure, othostatic hypotension and possibly leg cramps. If you get a blood test you may find that your potassium is low, too. Unfortunately, there is no reliable blood test for magnesium but it may also be low. Supplementing with salt should correct these problems. You don't need to take a potassium supplement, it will correct if you eat enough salt. Some people will have a persistent magnesium deficiency that will require supplements. This would be manifested by leg cramps and hyper-reflexia (something your doctor can check). To correct this you should take a slow-release Mg++ supplement daily.

Many people make the mistake of restricting salt and drinking lots of water when on a low carb diet. This is virtually guaranteed to cause problems. When you look carefully at the studies that report equivocal results with a low-carb diet, this is invariably one of the reasons.”

I don't consciously restrict salt, but I'd been led to understand that drinking around 2 litres of water a day is a good thing - is that not the case?

I think with water it's a matter of listening to your own body, not trying to follow some set formula that's supposed to be healthy. Animals drink when they're thirsty and so should we. Same with salt if you're not eating a whole lot of processed food, eat it if your body craves it. I probably eat heaps less than I used to, but I don't stint on adding it to my food.

I rarely feel thirsty unless I've been exercising and/or it's hot, so I don't see that I've been dehydrated all my life through not drinking enough water. Even now I have to consciously do it, easier in a dehydrated atmosphere such as an air conditioned office or plane.

I doesn't need to be just water a drink of tea is just as good, I don't drink a a lot of water but I do drink a lot of tea.

According to a team of scientists, the ‘eight glasses of water a day’ rule is misleading and drinks such as tea and coffee can hydrate the body just as well as water.

I am surgically attached to a bottle of cold tap water. Never without it. It keeps my skin clear, soft and smooth apart from anything else. The secret is not to glug it all down or you can overload your kidneys. Just small sips. I also drink a lot of tea.

I must admit I'm not a good drinker at all, though I do try, I just never seem to manage more than about 1.5 litres. I tend to drink water, sparkling water or decaf coffee. Now if I was drinking something like raspberry Yop, I think I'd be able to hit 2 litres a day LOL

If you only drink when you're thirsty, it's too late, dehydration has set in. Water should be taken in small amounts throughout the day if poss. It makes so much difference, especially if you workout.

I used to believe this too, Graham and I drink tea all the time, but when I went to donate blood last time, I got a ticking off from the nurse because I hadn't been drinking a lot of water beforehand to plump up my veins. She said anything with caffeine is diuretic, so it's in one end and out t'other.

Don't know whether it was the ticking off or not being hydrated enough, but my veins became even harder to find than usual and the whole visit was a painful failure. So, next time I'm going to make sure I'm awash with water before I go!

I agree partially, water in tea or coffee doesn't count for me but I do struggle to drink lots of plain water. I do like sugar free Vimto though, or similar squash. My personal opinion is this is acceptable but happy to be corrected ?

Don't quite know what happened  posted a reply to Jill and there it was gone  Shocked

    Lets try again Twisted Evil

Hi Jill, many moons ago when I first became a blood donor the phlebotomist told me about drinking water beforehand, since then I've always made sure I drink water before fasting blood tests, having said that I only drink tea for non-fasting tests and they don't have a problem finding a vein.
