OK, I love a good movie, especially the old Hollywood stuff. Here is a list of my best films by decade, up til there 90's. Feel free to add your own list.

    1. The 30's, The Wizard of Oz
    2. The 40's, It's a Wonderful Life
    3. The 50's, The Quiet Man ( Rebel Without a Cause close 2nd )
    4. The 60's, The Sound of Music ( so many good movies from the 60's, tough choice )
    5. The 70's, The Godfather Pt 2 ( closely followed by Pt 1 )
    6. The 80's, Raiders of the Lost Ark
    7. The 90's, The Shawshank Redemption

Goodness this is a tough one !

My most favourite film is 'Pretty Woman', I also love the Roy Orbison music. It may not be a masterpiece to some of you but for me a good film to curl up with a cup of tea, or glass of rose wine. I tend to watch it when Eddie's out fishing or busy on something else....it's not his most favourite.

There are so many good films out there - I enjoyed The Shawshank Redemption, Philadelphia, The Sound of Music, The Bourne Trilogy films too .....for me I prefer them to the Bond Films (sorry). Then how about The Girl with The Dragon Tatoo, Swedish Version.?

I guess from this eclectic list I do not have any favourite genres.

Also apologies Mo ......they may not be in decades, as you originally posted. flower

    Mods!

    This has gone off topic!

    Now, ahem where were we?

    1930's - King Kong
    1940's - Casablanca
    1950's - The Seven Samurai
    1960's - To Kill A Mockingbird
    1970's - The Godfather pt 2
    1980's - Aliens
1990's - Silence of the Lambs
2000's - No Country For Old Men
    2010's - Django Unchained

But I feel sad about all those wonderful films I have to discard to the also ran pile...

As Dillinger says, so many had to be left out, mostly gangster films or prison films. But if I could only have nine on a desert island these make it to the list.

    1930’s Gone With The Wind
    1940’s Ben Hur
    1950’s Doctor Zhivago
    1960’s The Godfather
1970’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
    1980’s Trading Places
    1990’s Pulp Fiction
    2000’s Road To Perdition
    2010’s Django Unchained

Mods can we do another list top ten gangster films ?

You're cheating Eddie; The Godfather was a 70's film. The 70's was the hardest decade I think though; there were so many fantastic films across so many genres.

It felt like the sixties to me Dillinger, only half marks, must try harder. Looking through the film lists it would have been easy to pick at least ten for every year.

Ah, but I was in the Godfather, I played the part of the fish in the waistcoat. And that scene was filmed two years earlier.

It highlighted to me really how little "classic" films are made in the last decade or so. Yes there have been good movies but a handful. Looking back to the 60's, 70's and 80's we were spoiled I think.

Agree Mo, like almost everything else, it's gone down the crapper. More money is spent on computer games now and they bring in more money than the Hollywood film industry. And man do I hate computer games.

I'm a tad younger than some of you so won't go too far back but for me it's:

    70s: Alien
    80s: Aliens
    90s: Fight Club
    00s: Gladiator
    10s: 12 Years a Slave

Also as an extra point I'd like to say I resent the idea modern films are no good. Super hero movies like The Batman films have more substance than ever and great films like 12 Years a Slave, No Country for Old Men, Shame, American Hustle and Inglorious Bastards can stand toe to toe with the likes of The Godfather, Pulp Fiction or The Shawshank Redemption.

This is like choosing albums or songs, it is likely to change daily depending on mood!

    Anyway, today's choices are

    1930s, Modern Times
    1940s, Citizen Kane
    1950s, North by Northwest
    1960s, 2001 a Space Odyssey
1970s, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
    1980s, Hannah & Her Sisters
    1990s, Pulp Fiction
    2000s, Atonement
2010s, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (the Swedish one)

........ two very young 'low carbers' recently told me their favourite movies are 'The Postman Pat DVD and The Peppa Pig one'

Took me back to early TV days with my children Postman Pat and Fireman Sam to name two - and they are still around!

Does anyone remember 'Andy Pandy' or 'The Woodentops'

I can remember Bagpuss and Mr Ben, they were very popular.

Nowadays, so I'm reliably informed it's Iggle Piggle - but on a slightly more serious note the foundations these childrens TV / Films set do last a lifetime. We are still remembering them !

I'm no film expert ....and it's years since we went to the cinema, we prefer to watch DVD's and pause them to make a cup of tea, or pour a glass of wine Smile  But there's a new film with Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank which apparently is good Question There's also a new film in 'The Hunger Games' series which is very popular...hope I've got the title right?

Will they be classics in years to come?  Time will tell ....have you been to the cinema lately, or re-watched a favourite DVD?
