Have A Chat - November

Thought as it is now the 2nd November we ought to start the November Chat thread, and oh dear November can so often bring fog and today is no exception.

If you are out and about do take care. Family friends are due to fly out from Gatwick today but it looks as if there may be some delays ...

Can't hear any birds singing either - perhaps they don't like the fog ?

Anyway the day started well EGGS on the menu - have you seen this report?

For many areas there are firework displays this evening - but will the weather be good.

As I look out of my window it is raining quite heavily.

These two are hoping it may dry up and they can enjoy some 'pretty and not too noisy' fireworks later.


I think once the fireworks have been sorted - it really will be countdown to Christmas.

Have you seen any fireworks this year?

My old man was never that fond of "alternative" comedy but he was moved almost to tears by the end of the Blackadder set in the war.

I remember watching the ending with the 'Over the top out of the trench' scene with that musical score followed by a peaceful field of poppies as a child with my parents and all of us were quiet with a lump in our throat-A total sea change from all the slapstick we all laughed at in all the previous chapters of Blackadder but very well done and it really made you think-Even as a young child.

After all the usual comedy in the preceding episodes I admit I was surprised and moved by the "Over the top of the trench" scenes too.

I always remember it when I see fields of poppies. We get them around here mainly along the roadsides and field edges, and there's an area of North Norfolk known as "poppyland".

After my mother died I found a whole bunch of letters from my grandpa (who died before I was born) to my grandma, back when he was, well actually a bit behind the trenches. He worked in what would today be called "logistics". Nevertheless he came back pretty broken both physically and mentally.

I have spent years researching and reading the history of wars. How any man comes back from sustained front line action and not deeply effected for a long time, maybe for life is beyond me. I am reading Gallipoli by L.A.Carlyon and it's a horror story. Hundreds of thousands of men killed and maimed and achieved nothing, and still we never learn, war never ends.

No one glorifies war like the British. Children should be told the truth and be shown what real total war is all about, but all they get is a sanitised version. When you know what war really is, no one would want to fight in one other than the defence of your own country and people and family. Look what our meddling in others affairs like Iraq has achieved, over a million dead and the whole middle east in total disarray. Millions trying to escape the carnage and now we reap what we have sowed.

There's no escaping it's 'Children In Need' Day today. So many charitable events including the grandchildren taking part in a sponsored 'welly boot' nature walk ...

I believe there was only one year since the start of the 20th century when no British soldiers died  in battle somewhere - and  of course some are routinely "lost" during exercises. Peacetime my arse.

Couldn't escape the fact that it is so called 'Black Friday' today ... even our local hospice care charity shop was advertising it ... and I do wish them well, Hospices do provide such wonderful and caring support.

But for the likes of Amazon and indeed all shops, stores etc. they do need us to open our purses and wallets and spend, spend , spend.

As yet, I haven't been tempted - have you?

GB have two new champions.

1)  In the Davis Cup Tennis - it's glory for Great Britain as Great Britain lifted the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years

2) In Boxing Tyson Fury won the WBA, WBO and IBF world heavyweight titles by beating Wladimir Klitschko on points in Dusseldorf.
