"The average female now spends almost 20 per cent less time on chores than her counterpart in the early 1980s.
Advances in technology also meant the housework she does do is likely to be lighter than in past.

While this brings many benefits, substituting strenuous housework for sedentary office work may take its toll on the waistline."

Our washing machine is on the way out, maybe I should get Jan an old fashioned wash board and mangle. Gotta think of her BMI I don't want her ending up with excess blubber. run

What a load of rubbish! Thinking back to the 1950's and 60's, my slim mother had a cleaning lady, a gardner, the larger items of laundry were collected and returned, groceries were delivered and I doubt she's ever been in a gym in her life and certainly never took part in any sport. Sorry researchers, but mopping the floor doesn't make a jot of difference.

Nah! middle class suburbia, sorry to disappoint you. Can't offer you a weekend salmon fishing on the estate.

But my point is that my generation of (middle class suburban) women and younger, have often had to do loads more than our mothers were expected to do, plus a full time job. Men may occasionally push the hoover round, but nowadays women wash cars, cut hedges, decorate and do lots of tasks which used to be their husbands' jobs. Yes, we may be fatter than our mothers / grandmothers, but it's not daily, routine activity that's made the difference.

Now, where's that parlour maid ……. I need someone to press the "Send" button for me …..!

What planet are you on? Jan, wash a car, cut a hedge, decorate, not a chance. The bottom line "Women know your limits"

I've always done the ironing at home and my Mrs is Norman The Foreman when it comes to decorating so maybe we are gender non-specific lol !

Don't believe a word Eddie says Sally far from being impoverished  he was brought up in a house with a bathroom  mrgreen
sheer luxury, we had an outdoor loo and a tin bath Shocked

As far as the study goes I can concur, as a widower I have to to do all the household chores today for example, got out of bed at 7.30 ish cup of tea then stripped the bed loaded the washing machine ready to go, shower shave and the unmentionables fired up the washing machine then had  breakfast and coffee. Next was to do the prep for evening meal which was a chicken casserole done in the slow cooker. Brief respite for another cup of tea whilst the washing machine  completed it's cycle then peg out the washing. Do a shopping list then head out to the supermarket  complete shopping then home unload shopping and make a big fry up for dinner wash pots after.

Given the good weather I decided to mow the the lawns part way through the mower packs up appeared to be an issue with the fuel so striped the carb down and cleaned the jets out problem resolved lawns cut . Washing  dried so made the bed up  then at 3.30 pm chill out time sat in the sun with a cup of of tea and read my paper did crosswords . As far as weight goes I did not gain any which for me is counter productive Shocked

Conclusions: I need a housekeeper any offers Wink

I've been doing very little housework, mainly because I want to blitz the place which will involve professionals and I may as well leave everything and do it all/get it all done at once.

    Haven't gained a pound.
