"There were 43 million children under the age of five classed as overweight or obese in 2013.
Jamie Oliver says that we're in the throws of a "global obesity epidemic". And judging by these figures from the World Health Organisation, he'd be right.

In answer to the world's alarming obesity problem, Oliver has launched his biggest campaign ever: a global petition which sets out to persuade the governments of G20 countries to provide their nations’ children with the "basic human right” of food education in schools.

The petition has been backed by the likes of Usain Bolt, Kylie Minogue, Ryan Reynolds and Matthew McConaughey, and so far, the celebrity chef has garnered over one million signatures.

"You really can’t underestimate people power," ... "Over the years, I've worked with many leaders and politicians, and the one thing they've all consistently voiced is that if we demand change, they’ll action it."

Obesity is a major global issue and it's something which can no longer be ignored. It's also a matter which is incredibly close to Oliver's heart.

"The bottom line is the next generation will live shorter lives than their parents if nothing is done to rectify these alarming stats," he says.

"Something is seriously wrong with our relationship with food and we need to act now before our health services around the world become overwhelmed by the effects of preventable diet-related disease."

Oliver believes that getting people to sign his petition will mark the first step towards changing the world.

"That’s a bold statement I know, but I’m confident that by harnessing our unified, global voice, we have the power to shape the future," he adds."

    Hi Jan!

I 'Do' support what Jamie is trying to do at a 'Grass roots' level Re, cooking from scratch with fresh food, ditching processed foods and of course...Sugar based junk! but gotta 100% agree with Verner on Jamie's' out of date views Re, Sat fats and his promotion of PUFAs being healthier instead! Inflammation anyone? No ...And of course, anyone whose been following Jamie for the last 20 years will know he sure loves his carbs! Pasta,Risotto rice, spuds,Ciabatta breads et al...No mention of those being restricted in the quest for combatting obesity and it is time Jamie and his advisors got up to speed on the role of carbohydrates in the diet and it's implications.

Yes ... I think what he is trying to do is a start for kids but Verner does bring in some excellent points doesn't he?

In my local supermarket quite recently, down the meat aisle I met a mother and child .... the child was about four. The mother was pointing out the different meats and talking about what animals the meat came from. I actually stopped to talk to her ... she said she was fed up with children just pointing at the biscuits, sweets, cereals and she wanted her son to be more aware of good foods. I told her well done.

Pity more parents do not do this.

    All the best Jan

Further to the recent thread I posted "EARTH SHATTERING, PIGS FLYING, HELL FREEZING NUTRITION NEWS" this is from the actual Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics report re-saturated fats which is another reason to question Jamie Olivers stance on fat in the diet.

It is also noteworthy that not a single study included in the review for cardiovascular disease is reported to have identified saturated fat as having an unfavorable association with cardiovascular disease, which is discussed in detail in Section V(B) below.17
