You Couldn't Make This Up - Page 4 Empty Re: You Couldn't Make This Up

    Post by chris c Sun Jul 08 2018, 21:42

My breakfast (which I don't always eat first thing) is usually a thickly buttered oatcake with smoked salmon or smoked ham, and coffee. Just enough to let my liver and pancreas know my throat hasn't been cut. After that I continue to metabolise the stored energy from my previous day's meal(s) up until I get hungry again some time between late afternoon and late evening. Sometimes I might eat some nuts or similar too.

I take back everything I previously thought about Nicola Guess gaining Clue.

I guess (pun intended) The Management had something to say to her

"With respect, the fact that you are entirely unaware of this literature is alarming, although not entirely surprising."

"I find it interesting that the entire field appears to be littered with amateurishness. Its almost as if its not a real profession at all. I really don't get it. It was hard to get into medschool in my day, did that change, or is lobotomy part of the initiation rite?"

And yet . . . when I was young there were no "epidemics" of obesity, diabetes and other metabolic diseases. Then the Food Pyramid was invented and now there are. Somehow eating like our parents and grandparents has become dangerous nonsense.

Partha Kar has done much good but I'd like to know if he has ever recommended a low carb diet to a diabetic, or told a diabetic it is dangerous.

    Just spotted this on twitter

    Helen Bond BSc.(Hons) SRD, MBDA
Consultant Dietitian and Public Relations Adviser

Helen Bond is one of the leading Dietitians in the UK and will be speaking on behalf of British Fruit Juice Association (BFJA) on Moments that Matter: Identifying consumption opportunities and incorporating 100% fruit juice into the diet for better diet quality and health

    What will this session discuss?

There are a number of moments in the day when drinking one small glass of orange juice can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. A single 150ml daily serving can help patients achieve their five-a-day, while vitamins in orange juice can help enhance the nutritional content of the foods they eat. Helen Bond will discuss how, and why, patients can benefit from consuming fruit juice at these moments, seeing them as opportunities to form a healthy habit.

About Helen - Helen graduated in 1996 with a 2:1 BSc. Honours degree in Dietetics from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, having incorporated six months studying dietetics and applied biology at the Université des Science et Technologies in Lille, France.

In 2000, she started her own business and took on the position of Consultant Dietitian. She currently provides assistance to several top name food companies, Public Relations (PR) consultancies and marketing agencies, is the nutrition voice for BBC Radio Derby, a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association and is regularly quoted in the national, consumer and health professional press.

Actually I used to prefer mandarin juice. What could possibly go wrong??? Someone described it as sugar water with a few vitamins.

    Hahaha Ivor is a classic

Meanwhile this is what "science" is doing

    Dietary changes and associations with
    metabolic improvements in adults with
    type 2 diabetes during a patient-centred
    dietary intervention: an exploratory
    analysis

    https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/bmjopen/4/6/e004953.full.pdf

    and the US equivalent

    Prevalence of Major Behavioral
Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes

    http://sci-hub.tw/10.2337/dc17-1775

basically "we know what people should eat to avoid diabetes but they just won't obey us".

Note those sodding grains front and centre.

    then there's

Transition from metabolic healthy to unhealthy phenotypes
and association with cardiovascular disease risk across BMI
categories in 90257 women (the Nurses’ Health Study):
30 year follow-up from a prospective cohort study

    http://sci-hub.tw/10.1016/S2213-8587(18)30137-2

these are nurses so they should know how not to become unhealthy, or fat, and yet here they are.

Meanwhile the anecdotes are now into the millions if you take into account Rita Venter's group and the Nigerian banters. They easily outnumber all the subjects of all the studies ever made but who will study them?

Desperation nobody else listens to them, had to laugh when a comment mentioned low carb zealots this when the angry chef is himself a junk food zealot, probably the reason why dietitians suck up to him

I agree on the weight focus, but I think there is enough evidence that LC dietary patterns can be useful for some ppl with type 2 diabetes. Part of the reason there is a debate is because people using this pattern have felt that professionals have labelled it a 'fad' 1/

    INTERNATIONAL CARBOHYDRATE QUALITY CONSORTIUM

    Mission
The International Carbohydrate Quality Consortium (ICQC) is a non-profit, worldwide organization whose mission is to support, summarize and disseminating the science around dietary carbohydrate and health with a focus on quality and to harmonize the work of scientists from academia, industry and government. Our activities focus primarily on carbohydrate nutrition and health promotion.

    http://carbquality.org/

Unsurprisingly Walter Willet is a member

The same Willet who in 2010 said:

    A reversal on carbs

"Fat is not the problem," says Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. "If Americans could eliminate sugary beverages, potatoes, white bread, pasta, white rice and sugary snacks, we would wipe out almost all the problems we have with weight and diabetes and other metabolic diseases."
