That naughty cardiologist, Dr Aseem Malhotra is at it again.  See,   http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-29929403
He says doctors should be telling people “to concentrate on eating nutritious foods  ….. its going to have an impact on their health very quickly. We know the traditional Mediterranean diet, which is higher in fat ……… reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke even within months of implementation.”.  “…. adopting a Mediterranean diet after a heart attack is almost three times as effective at reducing deaths as taking cholesterol lowering statin medication.”

But, don’t worry, those of you with shares in big pharma don’t need to phone your brokers just yet, the BBC has produced a balanced article and quoted Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England,  “Government advice is to eat plenty of bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods ……”

I think we on here will end up healthier than the general population at this rate, let alone the majority of diabetics.

    It gets worse !!!

Meadow Lea adds sugar to margarine to entice kids

Just when you thought margarine was about as dangerous as any ‘food’ could get, Goodman Fielder have released their new range with added sugar.

That’s right, now you can get margarine with added sugar.  And not just a smidge, one fifth of the product is sugar (sugar content ranges from 17.8% to 20.5% depending on the flavour).

The omega-6 fats which dominate ordinary margarine are implicated in (at least) osteoporosis, male infertility, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, allergies, asthma, macular degeneration, impaired intelligence and cancer.

But now with twice as much sugar as an equivalent quantity of Coke, Meadow Lea Breakfast Twists put the unwary consumer on track for an even more spectacular array of chronic diseases including Type II Diabetes, Kidney Disease, Fatty Liver Disease, Heart Disease, Erectile Dysfunction and Alzheimer’s.

If I tried to think of a way to combine the very worst of a processed food diet in a single product, I don’t think I could do any better than this.  Besides the obligatory preservatives, flavours and colours there’s really nothing in this product but seed oils and sugar (with a pinch of salt and a dash of ‘milk solids.

    Sally

Read more on Dr. Alison Tedstone here

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN)

"The conflict of interest is always interesting. In this case we have the chairman, Professor Peter Aggett with the SACN 2008 annual report declared interests as: Astra-Zeneca; Nestec; ILSI (I cover this ‘sugar protecting’ body in my book “The Obesity Epidemic“), Wellcome; Yakult and Cadbury Schweppes. The vice chair, Dr Ann Prentice, has declared interests as: Institute of Brewing & Distilling; Mars; National Association of British & Irish Millers; Optimal performance limited; Tanita; Coca-Cola; The Beverage Institute for health and wellness (yes, really) and Weight Watchers. Professor Sue Fairweather-Tait has declared interests in Coca-Cola, GlaxoSmithKline, British Egg Information Service, Unilever and Totus Medica. Those are the worst."

Yes and that same government advice based on the eatwell plate is also recommended for diabetics,

    • Fruit and vegetables: 33%
    • Bread, rice, potatoes pasta and other starchy foods: 33%
    • Milk and other dairy products : 15%
    • Meat, fish, egg, beans and other non-diary sources of protein: 12%
    • Foods and drinks high in fat or sugar: 7%

    http://www.newhealthguide.org/The-Eatwell-Plate-Percentages.html

This does not take into account the effects of energy requirements, so given that I need >3000 calories daily that would equate to at least 375g carbs daily, so for some reason I should be able to handle twice as many carbs as someone who only requires half the calories, I’d love to see the evidence based science that the NHS puts forward to justify such ludicrous amounts of carbs for diabetics.
