What has gone wrong with this world ?

In a few months time I will be 65 years of age and I often reckon I have seen it all. Then I read the news and think what a sheltered life I have lived. Sometimes I am glad I am getting old and have seen the best this country had to offer and I had my fair share of the good stuff. Check out this horror story.

"A 12-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl are among a gang of 11 suspected sex attackers arrested over an "appalling" assault on a woman in her own home.

The 43-year-old was sexually assaulted in her flat in Anfield on September 24 and today Merseyside police made the first widespread public appeals for help.

Officers were called to the apartment in Ullswater Street at around 4.20pm that day, after paramedics found she had been attacked.

Detective Superintendent Tim Keelan said: "The victim has been distressed by her ordeal and is being supported by specialist officers

"This was an appalling attack on a woman in her own home and we would urge anyone who has information, which could help us bring those responsible to justice, to come forward.

"It is possible that some of those who were in the flat on the day may have talked to people, including friends or family, about what happened and if they have we would urge them to contact us."

Eleven people have been arrested over the attack and released on bail.

As well as the 15-year-old girl, they are a boy aged 12, two 13-year-olds, two 15-year-olds, a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old from Anfield; a 15-year-old from Walton, a 13-year-old from Old Swan, and a 19-year-old from Everton.

Zis type of zing vould not have happen if German had one the var.

Not a subject I generally talk about; these things have always happened but worryingly there does seem to be an increase in incidents like these. It's very distressing.

Terrible that Eddie. I was reading about it earlier. The poor woman is being described as "vulnerable" which can mean many things but I think she had learning difficulties. Too early for details but I have my theories which I'll keep to myself for now. I hope they all get what they deserve and receive a "warm welcome" from fellow prisoners. My fear is they will be classed as too young to face prosecution or similar. We'll see.

It's very sad.

A man was jailed here in Wales yesterday for beating a vulnerable man to death for his pin code. All he got was £50.

We live in a sick, sick World. I know why, and what will happen, but I do not want to get caught in another ambush over religion.

No,you're right,it's a sick sick world indeed Ali.

This is indeed a terrible story, and we have heard many terrible stories recently.

Are our values changing? Do we see life as cheap and useless?

I don't for one ..... and have always tried to help people. I am sure there are more good people than bad, we do not always hear about the good.

Should we perhaps all try a little harder to 'do our bit' to help someone in our own neighbourhood or family?

One of the problems is that younger generations are brought (or dragged) up with no sense of decency, respect or responsibility. As humans we have a responsibility to teach our children values and dignity, but these vital ways have been lost and undermined by the 'me first' attitude of the World.

Much of it is driven by the Media, Commercialism and the 'Fame' culture. Children are poured out into this 'you are worth it', 'pamper and indulge yourself', 'why bother working for it, if you can get it for nothing' mentality that is in the very air we breathe.

The conscience has to be trained. If not awakened, it will drown under the barrage of 'gimme, gimme' that is a constant bombardment. Just this morning, a friend made a comment about tinnitus. In order to combat it, you have to replace the noise with 'white noise', music, or something else to distract the sound. But this system does not replace the 'wrong' noise with the 'right' kind of noise, with good, healthy ideals, values, and respect. Replacing one kind of noise with another noise of the same kind is pointless.

Personally I believe it has gone too far to be redeemable. Whilst society had moral values, be they religious or cultural, there were boundaries. Now those boundaries have been removed by the lack of spiritual or cultural values, anything goes. Society cares not a fig for values.

Whilst some may grieve the loss keenly, sadly the majority have welcomed it with open arms, calling it 'freedom'. Freedom to walk over everyone else to achieve one's own sense of gratification, be it wealth, happiness, or just sheer devilment......

I agree society does need boundaries, unfortunately in recent times I think these boundaries have become very blurred.

At a basic level children growing up need boundaries they need to know the line that can't be crossed and are often happier for this. Those who have been bought up with little or no discipline struggle. I'm not saying bring back the cane, or send them to bed without any supper but we need to use common sense and I feel that too is to be questioned in many cases.

What makes one person right and the other one wrong?

I think it is all about being firm, fair and consistent.

The sad fact is what role models do the young of today have?

Each of us can only do our best to work out what we think is right for us, and our family.

Life and choices get harder year on year, we can only do our best.

I think much of it starts at school. There is very little discipline now and too much PC. I'm not suggesting we should beat children but a clip round the ear or a detention never hurt anyone. Nowadays, teachers have very little power and the kids quickly learn. My wife was a learning support assistant about 5 years or so ago and she used to get so much abuse. One time, a 6 year old threatened to knife her ! Also, the parents are not much help, they don't support the school and can't see why "little Jonny" shouldn't be allowed to thump people !

Management at schools need to be strong ....and many are, but there is always room for improvement. However, I can remember when our youngest was about 14yrs old coming home from school and telling us 'he knows his rights' apparently the school year group had an assembly with the theme 'these are your rights' ....and didn't some of them keep trotting out their rights  

The words zero tolerance comes to mind - but this may be too strong

Life must be a balance between all sections of it, the problem remains achieving the correct balance.

Couldn't agree more.

Unfortunately there are too many who 'shy' away from their responsibilities.

I still think it comes down to home life. How we are brought up, our role models and a close link with home and school.

Nothing is, or has ever been perfect, and things are way from perfect at the moment.

There is no easy answer we need to be more aware that for every action there is a reaction.

However onwards and upwards - keep positive, and do our best in our small corner of the world.

It's the 'feet of iron mixed with clay' prophecy coming true. Some parts strong but some weak, and the weak is constantly undermining the strong.

Governments are there to set the example, but they are constantly being undermined by 'factions' that water down the fabric of society. Don't discipline children, teach them that they can do what they want, that they have rights, that those that commit crime often have more 'rights' than their victims...etc., etc.

Whilst these ideas are not necessarily wrong in themselves, they are often pushed way beyond reason - you can no longer give your child any physical discipline, your child's rights are more important than yours as a parent - taking away your right to nurture, care - and discipline as necessary.

The crazy thing is that these laws are made - taking away the right to discipline their children for the many, because of a few who would abuse it. And the irony is that no law would stop them doing that if they are of that mind-set anyway.....

The 60s kicked in the face of the often strict and unreasonable Victorian values, and rebelled, but in many ways it has bounced too far in the opposite direction.

When society goes from ridiculous to ridiculous with no foundation in balance and reason there is no structure. One of the most powerful factors in the destruction of the Roman Empire was the breakdown of its society and structure.....

Yes, I think you could say many rebelled in the 60's, not sure if that is the correct terminology - but things did start changing from the 60's onwards, perhaps it was inevitable after the war years and the 50's when many were hoping things would get back to 'normality' but the world had once again changed. It's how we perceive and deal with the changes.

Some I speak with feel there will come a time when many in society will rebel again and we go back to a far stricter code. I'm not sure about that.

History is there - but so often we make the same mistakes as happened many years ago.

The foundation is perhaps crumbling .....hopefully it can be rebuilt, time will tell.
