First of all; Happy New Year to everyone and apologies for being absent without leave for so long.

Second of all; sorry about the title.

Third of all; sorry about the following question which is about as boring a question as you could hope to be asked. Imagine if someone said this to you at a party? You'd run. But anyway, here it is:

Where to people get their socks? Does anyone use 'diabetic socks' do 'diabetic socks' exist? My socks seem to be about 15 years old and I need to get some new ones; is is worth spending money on them as the M&S ones I bought yesterday seem too thin and too flimsy.

Any thoughts? Eddie is a bit of a shoe expert so I thought I'd try...

My husband has recently bought lovely thick, warm socks at a country wear/provisions type shop.  The sort of place that sells saddles and Barbour jackets.  Not normally our sort of place (and I see you are in London, so maybe not so easy to find), but full of things that really do the job they are supposed to do.  Fisherman's suppliers also have clothes that "work", when you are after serious warmth, dryness and comfort.

Hi Dillinger someone told me you had emigrated. Socks, current favourites are Gelert usually pay around £7 a pair. Not long ago I brought 2 x 3 pairs packs from TK Max for a fiver a pack biggest bargain of the year. They may have been seconds but I can't see a problem with them, all washed many times and no grief.

A good place to get them is Millets but any place selling walking shoes and boots should have them or similar. A point to remember is you are going the medium to heavy weight sock route you need shoes that are a size larger. I was 7 and a half to 8 all my adult life now it has to be 9. I recommend thicker socks big time it's like walking around on soft carpet by comparison to thin socks.

I just brought three pairs of these shoes like wearing slippers, no good for heavy duty walking on rough ground but a pretty good shoe for everyday use for the money. http://www.josefseibelandfriends.co.uk/product.aspx?gender=mens&type=Formal%20Shoes&model=Burgess

    Link to socks Gelert http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gelert-Walking-Elasticated-Opening-Knitted/dp/B00L10VGT2

Now I have joined the ranks of OAPs I am stocking up on clobber and shoes while I have the dosh. Looking into my crystal ball the future looks very bleak on the financial front for all I reckon. Another massive financial crash just around the corner, the great ponzi scheme is coming to an end, all the signs look far worse than the 2008 crash. Start stocking up on tinned food with a long use by date. World War111 anyone?

It's being so cheerful that keeps me going affraid

    Love it Sally. lol!

If I was to start posting verified information on this forum to how this world works, and how the average person is totally and utterly ripped off financially and in just about every other way, from the cradle to the grave, many of the members would be aghast. Check out reserve and central banking and find out why savings become more worthless every day, why many pensions are not worth the paper they are written on, why the younger generation, will be debt slaves for most of their lives.

Anyone wondering why oil has gone from $115 a barrel to less than $50 yesterday in six months. Anyone wondering why the UK and the US and now the EU need to print (i.e worthless) countless billions to keep the Banks from folding. Anyone wondering why for the first time ever, money from prostitution and drug dealing was added to our economy recently, just to make the numbers look good.

The bottom line, diabetes should be the least of our worries, especially most of our members who have it under control.

Look, Eddie. The world is going to end on Friday. I have it on good authority from the gypsy lady at the end of the road AND I've seen it in my own tea leaves! There's absolutely no point in worrying about anything, not diabetes, not the national thick sock shortage (I bet you didn't know about that!), nothing.

Sally I reckon you are very bright person based upon your posts here. The problem with most people is they do not know what goes on, or those that do know, believe nothing can be done, nothing could be further from the truth. The problem, the greatest problem we face is apathy. The current state of diabetes control in the UK is a great example. 93% of type one diabetics in the UK fail to get to a safe HbA1c (NHS audited statistics) the situation is also very grim for type two diabetics. Most on this forum know and have proved this does not have to be. The same goes for many other situations. I might start a voice of doom thread it may be interesting for some of the members. I would hate to think most members would not want to know and bury their heads in the sand.

    Nothing can be done Eddie?

    Nonsense!

If the world is going to end on Friday that gives me a day and a half to get the socks and then go to the pub with Sally.

Also, thanks for those links Eddie; I think I need some medium thickness socks, my not so gigantic bank account won't stretch to upgrading my shoes.

Then do it gradually, the next pair of shoes you buy try them on with thick socks. Over time you will replace all your shoes. This will give you greater comfort and hopefully reduce any damage to your feet. I am sure no one more than you appreciates foot safety is vital for diabetics.

Back on topic Cool  I just get normal socks but avoid the cheap ones, I was told by a podiatrist the best to buy were those without a heavy seam at the toes.

I did find these sandal socks on ebay that might be suitable for Dillinger

If you've got a Shaws the Drapers near you they do Sockshop gentle grip ankle socks for men and women - three pairs for £2.95.  They sell the same brand women's ones in Matalan for £5.00 http://www.matalan.co.uk/womens/shop-by-category/socks-and-tights/s2574672/3-pack-gentle-grip-ankle-socks only Shaws have nicer women's colours.  The mens ones are black, blue and grey.

This is the website of the manufacturer https://www.sockshop.co.uk/by_type/specialist/gentle_grip/index.htmlbut they are loads more expensive direct from them rather than from Shaws.

Edit: The Shaw's stores seem to be in Wales, south west of London and the South West http://www.shawsdirect.com/static/ourstores and they don't sell the socks online.

    oh man Sad

i was kinda counting on the financial stuff being better from now on, I'm depressed now

best socks in the world are american socks, i don't know why, when we go to the states we go with empty cases and buy lots of clothes, even the socks from walmart are amazing, have for years with no shrinkage, why on earth socks from one country would be so superior to socks from another is beyond me, but they sure know how to make socks over there

Well the title had me intrigued ....... isn't it amazing how one comment leads to another, the conversation goes round and round and comes back to socks Exclamation

Seeing my grandchildren in 'Minion' socks from Despicable Me and 'Fairy princess' type socks ..... I looked down at mine. Grey with small roses on - how suitable is that for my age and demeanour  Smile ?

On a serious note looking after your feet is important. Children should have their shoe size regularly checked and it has always dismayed and annoyed me at the price of children's shoes, but growing bones should be protected - shoes and socks should be a good and comfortable fit.

As we get into our teens and that little bit older - the more fashion conscious we get, good fitting sensible shoes somehow goes out of the window. Winkle pickers were the worst I think - do a google search if you're not sure what they look like.

Nowadays, and yes it is probably my age, I am into nice comfortable shoes and great socks. Walking shoes like Chris Brasher and socks like Gelert. Around the house it may just be socks with pretty roses on them LOL  flower

Pretty socks! I love them. I collect them like other women collect shoes. I recently told my husband that when I die he is to give all my brand new pairs to my son's fiancée because she has a 'thing' about socks too and her tastes are very like mine. I do have a few diabetic pairs too, but don't particularly like them much.

My podiatrist told me no need to purchase special diabetic socks or anything. Cotton socks changed daily are fine. She didn't mention having the need for a big hole where my big toe sits though ! Is this normal :-)
