    Nine years. Empty Nine years.

Post by Eddie Mon Mar 20 2017, 19:22

On the 25th of this month I will have been a type two diabetic for nine years. Within a month or so I went the low carb route. It was a no brainer, once I found out all carbs turn to sugar once digested. One point cannot be argued, diabetics are the most allergic to sugar people on the planet. At diagnosis I was prescribed two 500mg Metformin tablets, I have not changed my diabetes medication over the nine years. The worst HbA1c test other than at diagnosis (at diagnosis almost HbA1c 12) is HbA1c 6.5. old money numbers. That was the last test, at my age a small rise in HbA1c is to be expected, as in all health related issues ageing does us no favours. All other HbA1c tests have indicated non diabetic.

If I was younger say in my forties or fifties, I would make more effort to get back into the 5% club. Tests such as Hospital blood tests, retinopathy scans and checks for neuropathy etc. confirm I made the right decision to go low carb higher natural healthy fats. Nine years ago low carbers like me were regarded as mavericks, bucking the so called food pyramid and eatwell plate. These days, highly respected medical professionals are promoting low carb to not only diabetics, but to all looking to stay healthy.

Here’s to the next nine years, the low carb lifestyle is going mainstream, even an old optimist like me never expected to see that in my lifetime. People are catching on fast, a diet based on sugar and highly processed refined carbohydrates, is now the new tobacco, need I say more. Good luck and health to you and yours.

Happy 9th 'Diaversary' Eddie and here's to many more years of you and others spreading the good news mate! The worm really does seem to be turning in regards to the LCHF way of eating and what the naysayers rant about in opposition doesn't hold any weight to the many these days.

Not far behind Eddie I will reach nine years on April 4th and despite the dire warnings by dietitians about the perils of low carb I'm still here to tell the tale  Cool

Twelve years here and the same story. Well technically I have never been diabetic because I "only" scored 10.8 not 11.1 on my Glucose Tolerance Test, but then most of my symptoms since early childhood turned out to be symptoms of diabetes or symptoms of conditions that are "common in diabetes" so I've at least been severely prediabetic for fifty years.

I recently decided on my epitaph

"See! We said twenty years ago that dangerous low carb diet would kill him!"

that gives me another eight years if I'm lucky.

I think things are going in both directions at once. There are far more doctors, nurses and researchers, and even a few dieticians who are following science, and what patients of all kinds, and healthy people, are doing. OTOH as low carb works its way up from the grass roots so the unholy alliance between Coke, vegans and drug companies is making a massive fightback.

Thanks for the kind words. As all know here there is nothing special regarding my control of diabetes. I know others who have better control. It seems to me, the younger a person is the greater the need for good control. Type two diabetes used to be an old mans disease, I am a typical bog standard type two, joining the betus club in late middle age. Unfortunately very young people are increasingly joining the club. I fear for their chances in getting to the biblical three score years and ten. A very sad state of affairs, this does NOT have to be.

Yeah, some of our generation will outlive some of their children. Scary stuff!

Thanks for all your work in spreading the word and winding up the right people. You can come to my funeral.

Thanks Chris but you are too modest. It was you and Fergus at the flog, who influenced people like me and Graham almost nlne years ago. thumb-up How you never got banned over there is a mystery. mrgreen

    I left before they could!

I learned what I knew from others, mainly on Usenet before it became a repository for trolls and spammers. The likes of Jenny (Janet Ruhl) and Alan Shanley and many others.

Then I decided to pass it forward.

In retrospect a BIG lesson was that, as Malcolm Kendrick wrote, the flack is always thickest when you're over the target. What the low carb antis with their relentless attacks actually did was to drive people away but INTO other places, like blogs, forums, books and some like Fergus into Real Life education programmes. So the word was actually spread far wider.

Almost everything we know we have been taught by others. I believe it is our moral obligation to help fellow diabetics whenever we can. Call it payback for the good fortune we have had being helped by others.
