    Sparrow Grass Empty Sparrow Grass

    Post by chris c Wed Apr 25 2018, 22:52

Yes finally the local asparagus farm is in production so I bought a bunch.

Didn't eat it yet as I also got some purple sprouting broccoli from my friends, along with a couple more (frozen) pheasants.

I had some of the broccoli with a chicken (breast) curry/stir fry while a pheasant defrosts into edibility.

I happened upon Chris' sparrow grass post ...

It is of course the folk name for asparagus - well that's what Wikipedia said!

Asparagus, or garden asparagus, folk name sparrow grass, scientific name Asparagus officinalis, is a spring vegetable, a flowering perennial plant species in the genus Asparagus.

It's always so lovely when asparagus season in the UK starts, wish it would go on longer.
I know it's always in the shops but just sometimes it can be a little woody.

Yes the less distance it travels the tastier and more tender.

It was a very short season here mainly due to the hard weather I suspect. Ah well, the samphire is here as a sea-flavoured alternative. That and wild asparagus are found along the coast and estuaries but strangely the samphire from the fish van is imported from Holland.
