Dropping the big six! Empty Dropping the big six!

    Post by Paul1976 Sat Aug 23 2014, 14:06

Dropping the big six ? well what does this mean in real terms and what does this have to do with Diabetes control ?

The big six are the main 6 foods that are responsible for post meal high blood glucose levels in nearly all diabetics.

The big six consists of Potatoes or other tubers such as sweet potato, pasta, rice, fruits with a high fructose content such as apples, bananas, grapes, pineapples, peaches etc, breakfast cereals and lastly bread and pastry products.

Replace these with vitamin and iron enriched fruits, vegetables and natural sat fats sourced from meat such as Chicken with the skin on left on,fresh beef, lamb, duck and then dairy such as cream, eggs, cheese, nuts such as walnuts and macadamia nuts, fruits such as blueberry’s,raspberry’s,strawberry’s and plenty of dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, savoy cabbage, curly Kale, watercress and brussel sprouts.

Many of us have found that making this switch has resulted in vastly improved BG numbers, cholesterol levels and ratios, reduction or sometimes elimination of prescribed medications, weight loss when required and a good HbA1c level.

Of course this goes against the current guidelines and may appear to be a ‘leap of faith’ in the early days after diagnosis but I would encourage anyone to try this and see the rewards for themselves, what is there to lose but inches off your waistline and much improved blood glucose levels?

    Great post Paul

For countless type two diabetics around the world, dropping the big six is all they have to do to reverse their diabetes and live a long and active life. What a blow for big pharma, my heart bleeds for them. For insulin using diabetics, the advantages are just as many. Less medication, far more predictable BG numbers for many and far better control. Dr. Richard Bernstein calls this the power of small numbers. The less the carbs, the less the insulin, the less the insulin, the less the margin for error.

The best controlled diabetics I have ever known, and I know many, are all low carbers. When I say well controlled I am talking about HbA1c less than six. Some members of this forum are holding HbA1c in the four's, try doing that on the usual dietary recommendations from the NHS, DUK,ADA etc. totally impossible and all the stats prove it.

Why many of us, have had so much grief elsewhere, is way beyond my understanding. Cutting the foods that we cannot tolerate and make us seriously ill, makes perfect sense to me, and to the forum membership I am sure. But heh, the Lard works in mysterious ways. I sometimes think some people have 4lb of lard between their ears. But what do I know.

    Kind regards Eddie

Looking back at some earlier posts thought this one well worth repeating or bumping up flower

It may take some of us back to when we started low carbing and may be helpful to anyone thinking of giving it a go.

Thanks Jan for the *Bump*! Smile

I'm not great at posting or interpreting studies or posting graphs but this was the easiest way for me of putting low carb across from my point of view in simple terms that I hope will be of use to a newly diagnosed member...Dropping the big six has served me well and I hope it will serve others well too. Smile

    Best Wishes

Hi there and a warm welcome to the Forum sunny

As you've probably read on this thread (and others) by dropping the big six ... blood sugar numbers can be lowered.

Talking to other diabetics there are those who do still include 'bread' in their meal plans and choose the lower carb variety such as the 'LivLife' brand which has 3.8g carb per slice.

    Some may make a flax-seed loaf, https://lowcarbdiabetic.forumotion.co.uk/t55-low-carb-flax-seed-bread

others make 'oopsie bread' or similar https://lowcarbdiabetic.forumotion.co.uk/t364-oopsies-low-carb-bread

It always comes down to personal choice and if you are diabetic the effect it has on your blood sugar numbers.

Hi and welcome to the forum, do you test your blood sugars ? that is the only way you will find out if your slice of toast is ok for you. We are all different I can't tolerate bread especially in a morning.

I'm intrigued about the bread you use I have never seen a bread as low in carbs as the one your using can you give us some info on the make

    Cheers
    Graham
