Patients who manage type 2 diabetes with drugs that lower glucose or blood sugar may be at higher risk for heart failure.

    Published on Mar 17, 2015

Dr. Jacob Udell, cardiologist, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, University Health Network (UHN) and Women's College Hospital (WCH) discusses the main findings of a new study published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology (March 2015), which found that medications used to treat diabetes may trigger heart failure.

I can't access the full study but the abstract compares lowering A1c  with drugs or standard care whatever that means. The drugs with the highest risk incuded Actos and Avandia and to a lesser extent januvia (Sitagliptin) Galvus (Vildagliptin) Onglyza (Saxagliptin) Tradjenta (Linagliptin)

One other very important point to note is an insulin using type two diabetic has up to 3 times the death rate as a non insulin user, dose dependent. This was discussed in great detail at the flog, but the usual suspects worked night and day to get the thread locked. If any members has a bit of time to spare the thread is well worth reading and has some great information. BTW I was fatbird over there, when my identity became known, instantly banned, can't think why LOL.

The first post by a very well informed member, like so many others the member was disgusted with the way the flog operates and walked.

    The members first post.

"A few days ago, the email 'newsletter' from Diabetes.co.uk flagged a very recent study which showed that Type 2 Diabetics taking insulin had 3 x the mortality rate of Type 2s taking, for example, metformin. The authors also flagged the mechanisms bu which the higher mortality rates were induced by the action of insulin (i.e. they were linking the higher risk of death directly with taking insulin not with, for example, any differences in risk due to the existing health profile of people likely to be offered insulin).

Has this given anyone else on the forum 'pause for thought'?"
