PM May has played a blinder, or has she? Empty PM May has played a blinder, or has she?

Post by Eddie Sat Apr 22 2017, 17:13

When I first heard about the June general election, I was not surprised. Never has the main opposition (the Labour party) been in such a poor state. Lead by a man with good intentions (maybe) but as electable as my next door neighbours cat. Imagine Corbyn as PM and Diane Abbott Home Secretary, frightening. The Lib Dems lead by a man clearly living in a dream world of his own, and the SNP, a one trick pony hell bent on bankrupting Scotland.

So, on paper and a couple of days ago, May seemed to be playing a blinder. Wipe out most of the opposition and a far bigger Tory majority. What could go wrong? But now we hear she has refused to answer questions on the so called ‘pension triple lock’ refused to answer questions on increased taxes. We already know the Tories want to privatise as much as the NHS, where they think they can turn a profit.

I am beginning to think this election could backfire big time for May. Times have changed, we have seen some big surprises in the last year. Who would have thought the referendum would go the way of the leavers. Who would have thought Cameron would resign in a matter of hours, after the result became clear. Who gave Donald Trump a chance in hell of becoming the President of the USA. It seems to me, people will vote in favour for who they detest the least. Basically, picking the best of a very bad bunch. The choice could come down to a bloke who looks like a smartened up version of old man Steptoe, or a woman with all the warmth, charisma and charm, of a concentration camp commandant.

    Interesting times ahead.

I agree Eddie, I think it will be a close run thing and an upset could be on the cards. She seems to be banking on giving the people Brexit ( many don't want it ) and her only other real strength is the weakness of others. I don't trust her and she has no charisma or personality at all, in fact, rather arrogant.
Corbyn has some popular issues in his manifesto but without his own Party's full support it will be a tough job. I certainly don't like all his ideas but he'll probably get my vote, lesser of two evils in my opinion.

I feel quite aggrieved about it all to be honest-I don't trust May and in an ideal world (For me) I'd vote for UKIP to end PC crap once and for all but a vote for UKIP (Who have no chance of a majority) will take a vote away from the only party who will give us the divorce from the corrupt EU that I and the majority voted for last June, the Tory party...Vote UKIP-Get Corbyn-Abbott or the lamentable Dim Tim Farron...If May shafts us with a soft Brexit and ruins the NHS the Tories are finished forever and there'll be a revolution for sure.

I hear what you are saying but UKIP is I believe a spent force. They accomplished what they set out to achieve, a referendum. I reckon Farage knows this. UKIP attracted too many extremists, nutters and racists into their fold. The PC mob are destroying this country, but they have very loud voices and beloved by the media, especially the corrupt and biased BBC. One of the problems the PC mob have brought about, is the fact people are frightened to state publicly about their true beliefs. Hence the powers that be got it so wrong regarding Brexit and Trump. What people were saying, was totally different to how they eventually voted.

The Labour party went downhill when Blair et al gained control, Tories in all but name. The Tories have never had any interest in the well being of the 'working class' the disabled, the poorly educated etc. etc. I believe we will see a soft brexit, let us not forget May was for remain. As for a revolution, you can forget that. While the majority are glued to the box, have Sky TV and enough money to survive until the next pay day, they will feel everything is hokey cokey.

Hi Mo "lesser of two evils" I guess that is what it comes down to, maybe it was always the same, but we deserve more. I suspect most on here are in a reasonable position. Roof over their heads, good grub, and better off than many. Not too much to expect, when some of us have put in 50 years of work, or will do, during their life time. We live in a world where the most greedy, the most obscenely corrupt, get knighthoods and elevated to the House Of Lords. And to think, we thought it was a big deal regarding the great cons, regarding the best diet for diabetics, from on the junk food payroll dietitians, and big pharma etc.

What are folks here idea of a perfect government and what they should achieve?

Heavy investment in the nhs, education, help the disabled, old and poor, very low unemployment, low taxes, a healthy manufacturing sector, allowing the highly educated foreigners in but not allowing anyone else?

    Where would you start?

Heavily taxing the rich whilst expecting them to invest all they have? Reducing the highest paid bankers and expecting those jobs to attract talent? Equaling the pay gap by upping wages of the low paid whilst reducing the pay of the bosses?

How the hell do they do it better? And why if everyone can do it better aren't they running for local councils, members of parliament or prime minister?

Let's see someone's ideas on pleasing everyone instead of slaughtering the folks trying, show me a country around the world who are getting it right, the brightest minds in the world are devoting their lives to public service and failing 100% but we all criticise them constantly, choosing what they are doing wrong without any clue how to change it without screwing up other stuff

What is it you say... "I'll get my coat"

Good grief, after all this time we seem to have a real debate going on this place.

I reckon Paul was pretty spot on with his quote regarding Andy's comments.

"Heavy investment in the nhs, education, help the disabled, old and poor, very low unemployment, low taxes, a healthy manufacturing sector, allowing the highly educated foreigners in but not allowing anyone else?"

One proviso, I don't care who comes into this country providing they are vetted, we have seen criminals convicted of murder and rape in other countries, let into the UK and committed serious crimes, including murder again.

I am only too happy to debate infinitem about what is wrong with this and other countries. Let's see who stays around.

One of the most fundamental of human emotions is hope, without hope, all is lost. Successive Governments have taken away hope from so many people, especially the young. The young have been conned into a University education. No degree, no chance of a good job, don't worry about the £50k of debt old chap. Debt slavery before the kids even start to earn a living. Want a modest home, no problem, all you need is £50k plus for a deposit a way above average salary and you might get lucky.

Physical or mental disability, poorly educated through no fault of your own, fuck your luck. Meanwhile we give huge amounts of money to countries, like India and Pakistan who can afford nuclear weapons and space programs. But hey, we gotta grease those corrupt palms eh.

The bottom line, everywhere we look corruption and greed is drowning us. The average boss of a UK footsie 100 company earns 300 times the wage of an average worker. Who are these people, can they turn lead into gold, can they walk on water? Meanwhile, we have to look back to the days of the Roman Empire, to find a more treacherous, lying, thieving, and corrupt bunch than the scum that governs this country.

Don't get me wrong, I am one of the lucky ones, left school at 15, with zero qualifications. Climbed up more than one greasy pole and did OK. Mind you, those were the days when applying some intelligence and working your butt off reaped it's rewards, those days are over. Jeez, you need a PhD these days to get a job on the dustcart, sorry refuge disposal technician.

    Margaret Thatcher Lite.

It's a choice between her, the Bearded Tit or Tim Nice But Dim.

I've actually known not a few people who could do a better job, but guess what, none of them wanted it.

Would you believe it was back in April that the General Election was first talked about and now here we are with less than a week to go before the Nation decides ...

I have to say that April seems an age ago - does it to you?

Our letterbox was once again full of election leaflets and why we should vote for this party, that party or some other party...

To state the obvious, time will tell who gets the PM job.

What with the debates, (will she or won't she debate) to Question Time and beyond!!!
I just wonder how many will stay up late to watch the results?

    All the best Jan

I have to admit Corbyn has been appearing quite sensible while May has been appearing more clueless, but the most that will happen IMO is that her landslide victory will be slightly less of a landslide than it would have been.

After that the gloves really come off. She will proclaim herself President For Life, rename the BBC Teresa May PLC and the NHS Jeremy Hunt PLC. Or possibly Virgin Hunt.

OTOH if Corbyn does pull it off veganism will be enforced, and didn't I read Andy Burnham was going to make NICE "Guidelines" legally enforceable on doctors. Either way I doubt anything will improve much.

Either way I would trust them only slightly more than the Tories, which is to say, not a lot. I doubt I'll bother to vote, Theresa Coffey is a shoe in, and for a Tory she's actually quite sensible - though she seriously needs a low carb diet.

May not as strong and stable as she tells us methinks. Meanwhile Corbyn has impressed me more as the weeks have passed. Too close to call I reckon. The thing Corbyn has failed to realise - Government for the Many not the Few - is that the people don't WANT to be the Many. They want to believe they can become the Few, even though they never will.

It has always seemed to me, to be one of the few, you needed some of the following. Wealthy parents, be very clever, very lucky or a crook. Maybe a combination of those things. I reckon most on here, had none of those things as we were growing up. One thing most of our generation never had, was a sense of entitlement. All we wanted was a job and the chance to earn money. Before I left school at 15, I was in no doubt, work was the only way to get anywhere in this life. Although voting Labour all my life, it made, and will still make no difference, after today, who (allegedly) runs this country. Big money and corporate interests, run this and every other country, they always have, and always will. Politicians of every colour, are in the rich peoples pockets. So called democracy is like religion, it fools the dullards they have some control and a say in what goes down.
