"I was fartleking," Empty "I was fartleking,"

    Post by Jan1 Fri Oct 10 2014, 21:41

You may have already read ..... I do enjoy the internet and 'hop' over to other peoples blogs on a regular basis. The blog may be in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, The States ....who knows which country I may end up in?

One particular blog I enjoy is "Old Running Fox" and in his most recent post he states "I was fartleking" ....well were you I thought and read on with interest, his photographs are great too.

I later discovered (thanks to Wiki) "Fartlek, means "speed play" in Swedish, and is a training method that blends continuous training with interval training. The variable intensity and continuous nature of the exercise places stress on both the aerobic and anaerobic systems. It differs from traditional interval training in that it is unstructured; intensity and/or speed varies, as the athlete wishes. Most fartlek sessions last a minimum of 45 minutes and can vary from aerobic walking to anaerobic sprinting. Fartlek training is generally associated with running, but can include almost any kind of exercise."

Some of you may have come across the term 'Fartlek' or even done some 'Fartleking'  but lovely 'Old Running Fox' is in his 80's .....as I said to him recently I didn't even walk 26 miles this week let alone run them.

Have any members here done 'Fartleking' or know anyone that does?

I've put a link to his blog - do go over and have a look.

Fartlek is a form of HIIT ( high intensity interval training ). An example may be 30 secs full effort aerobic exercise followed by 15secs rest. This would be repeated multiple times for a single workout, eg, 20 X 30secs, 15secs rest. A great workout in short time frame. The thing is, the active exercise must be 100% effort. Can be sprints, bike, rowing or lots of other combinations.

The difference between Fartlek and HIIT is usually work to rest ratio. Fartlek is generally double active exercise to rest, eg, 1 min active, 30 secs rest. HIIT is still interval training but more like 1 min active, 1 min rest or similar.

If you're just doing the "fart" part you must ensure that each fart lasts a minimum of 30 secs. This must be followed by 15secs non fart action :-)
