When the lights go out ...

Post by sanguine on Mon Dec 08 2014, 17:24

Or, when the bomb goes off
Or, when the balloon goes up

In The Observer yesterday the Tech Monthly supplement gave food values for three invertebrates that might be on the snack menu in the future (well for some affraid ).

    All numbers per 100g

    Grasshoppers - 390 kcal, 12g fat, 10g carb, 0 sugar, 50g protein

    Crickets - 458 kcal, 18.5g fat, 0 carb, 0 sugar, 7.7g fibre 69.1g protein, 1.03g salt

    Mealworms - 550 kcal, 37.2g fat, 5.4g carb, 0 sugar, 6.5g fibre, 45.1g protein, 0.37g salt

So the crickets look a good bet - bon appetit!

I'd need to be pretty hungry to eat crickets ! However, in many countries eating insects is the norm and very nutritional. I guess if we showed them a turkey twizzler, they'd think we were potty !

Excuse me, I think you have a cricket leg stuck in your teeth.....

    It's bad enough eating celery.

I think they'd be like eating shell-on prawns complete with antennae. Can't do that.

You'd have to be exceedingly desperate methinks.

We 'd be ok. We have a steady source of mice getting caught in our traps. Bit more meat on those. Or we could catch the naughty squirrel who keeps wrecking the birdies nut cage.

Deep fried crickets with a bit of mayonnaise sounds pretty good to me. Especially garlic mayonnaise.

    Hmmmm.
