Flu and Pneumonia Jabs Empty Flu and Pneumonia Jabs

Post by Mud Island Dweller Thu Sep 11 2014, 08:55

What's everyone's opinion of flu and pneumonia jabs.
Last year l had a flu as requested by the dn and was fine, didn't get a mild flu dose which l expected even though assured l wouldn't my mum who had flu jabs really suffered with the jab.

I have in the past had flu x2 and pneumonia x1 and was not nice so debating what to do.

The dn recons only one pneumonia jab and that lasts for life, l didn't have it last year l felt way to ill when l was Dx then forgot about it. Now it is starting to be talked about flu jab time and there is also to consider a pneumonia jab. I have generally very tight control, that's not to say l won't get them but l am totally undecided.

When I was diagnosed in January I was offered both jabs. I said I would take them but not on the same day as they were suggesting.

The flu one was fine with no adverse effects. It doesn't contain a live virus.

God know what was in the pneumonia one though as I felt like crap for days after it with slightly elevated bg. Better than getting pneumonia though so worth it. Fortunately it was a one-off and should do me for life.

I plan on getting the flu jab this year again.

In the six years or more I have been a diabetic, I accepted a flu jab once, I was laid up for a week, probably the worst I have felt in my life, never again. Others seem to have no side effects. By and large I tend to do the opposite medics tell me to do, especially dietitians, with the exception of Franziska of course.  The way I see it if you are running non diabetic BG numbers why should our risk to anything be higher than a non diabetic. As soon as we become a diabetic we are seen as a risk for everything under the sun. With all the blood test we have I reckon we know more about our state of health than the millions walking around that have never had any tests.

Not being diabetic or having any other underlying health problems I'm not offered a flu or pneumonia jab. However the grandchildren have been ........

Now is that a good thing or a bad thing ? A decision to be made by the parents.

But do we innoculate / vaccinate our young too much ?

Is it really necessary for these flu jabs, in the so called 'at risk' groups.

Any views or thoughts to exchange and ponder on ...... ?

I normally accept the flu jab if I'm sent a letter but don't bother asking for one if it's not offered. The only exception to this has been when the vaccine was for Swine flu, I refused that year because I didn't think they had had long enough to properly test the vaccine.

I nearly always get a reaction even though it's a dead virus and sometimes I am laid up in bed for a few days. Sometimes I think the vaccine hasn't been prepared properly and some of it is actually still live and sometimes it's my immune system working. One year I didn't get a reaction and that year I caught flu a few months later.

I normally accept the flu jab because I am asthmatic as well as diabetic. One year I had 7 chest infections resulting from colds. Three years ago I had pneumonia twice and then I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have never been offered the pneumonia jab. I don't like having the flu jab I would prefer not to need it, I have it because chest infections affect me really badly.

Was in Chester yesterday went in to Boots ask about flu jabs. the lady went to speak to the pharmacist came back with a piece of paper that said only Type 3 got jabs. I said she better get a crash course in diabtes there is 1/1.5/2/brittle and gestational. So make up your mind. She came back full of apologies it was written wrong!!!. Anyhow as l didn't live in the are no go.

Today l tracked down sainsbury near us are offering free nhs flu jabs from 1st november. Which is fine while l decide A) if l go ahead with it and B) l am fighting off some lurgie. Throat and head just not quite right... and before anyone makes any comments about my head not being right... DONT! Evil or Very Mad

had the jab a couple of weeks ago and havent been right since, the last "cold" i had was the last flu jab Neutral this is not me saying dont have it, because all i have is a general feeling of unwellness and a swollen sore right nostril (lol dont ask me) nothing specific and thats certainly better than the flu, but i do wonder as ive only had the flu once in my 44 years, the flu jab definately effects me Sad

edit: my little one also hasnt been great on it

ive had a stuffy nose, not a streaming nose just a stuffy nose, my glands are swelling up and down every other day, and my right side of my nose is swollen inside and painful, only the right hand one lol, and i just generally feel like im fighting something

the little one had a raised red patch the size of a large orange for days, and felt lethargic for a week, she seems ok now

it was two weeks ago, nothing terrible though and it could be a coincidence

edit: the red patch was at the injection site on her arm

oh and we both felt like we had dead arms for a couple of days afterwards, dunno if thats normal

I have had flu jab buy I really don't know if they're good or bad. I'm told we are "at risk" as diabetics and should have them but I rarely get ill so I can't say for sure.

I think I'm right in saying the UK and it's people are the most innoculated nation.

Whether or not we choose to be innoculated or to have our children receive their recommended ones is of course a personal choice and never an easy one.

I wonder how many of the health professionals have these innoculations? If they do - do they feel easy about them.

I'm all for helping the body defend itself .....but I think we must research the for's and against before we can make as much of an educated choice as possible.

I was offered (and accepted) both flu and pneumonia jabs when I had my last DN appointment earlier this month. No adverse effects that I noticed apart from a short-lived raised bruise at the injection site for one of them.

Nothing like the old cholera and typhoid jabs I used to have when going overseas, which could knock me sideways for days.

I've already answered re the flu jab.  This is about children's vaccinations.  When I wasn't sure whether to let my children have them or not I used to ask myself.... What would I do if there was an epidemic of whatever the jab was to prevent?  Would I rush to get them vaccinated then?  If the answer was 'Yes', then I agreed to let them have it.  The thing is with a 'Yes' decision you only have to make it once.  If you say 'No' then you have to keep on repeating that every time there is a scare or a drive to give the jabs to those who missed out on them.  That's fine if you really are sure you don't want your child to have the jab, but if you're not sure it's difficult to keep saying 'No'

I think you're right Mo - I've heard others also say it's a one time jab.

l am still holding off. Hub has come down with either very severe cold or proper flu can not decide but it isnt a dose of man flu. Started last week light headed then bad stomach and huge acid build up. Dr on monday ended up blood test and sample lets say dr hopes to confirm it is just the pepto bismouth problem (l got him some much to drs disgust.. l am now fully chastised but it was great when Brian and l had noro a few years back)
Then progressed over monday night to blocked nose sore throat, chills and fever. All week spent in bed most of the time speaking with a baritone an opera singer would envy and very nasally.

I have been teetering on things myself my throat has been sore and ok like a roller coaster, had a couple of days on off light headed and nose has been bunged a few times. l am definitely fighting it so far on the winning side but do not want to risk a jab when my immune system is on a precipice.

Interestingly my BG has been fine which l thought would go climbing l have held off doing many checks as l can not change if they go high with this lot and don't want to waste sticks.

This flu jab thing is a real lottery ! I had one but not sure if it's the right thing to do still. They say I'm "at risk" but I rarely get ill. Sods Law will mean the year I refuse it is the year I get it !

Well I'm recommended to have the jab because, I have diabetes, asthma, have had a heart problem (though it's fine now!) and am trying to help care for my Aunt who is elderly. The last reason is the one that made me decide I would have the jab again this year. I would love to be strong enough to say I don't want one, but I'm not, so now my arm is badly swollen (whinge) Sad

I had the pneumonia jab in 2008  it seems for me it is a one off Very Happy

People over-65 only need a single pneumococcal vaccination which will protect for life. It is not given annually like the flu jab.
People with a long term health condition may need just a single one-off pneumococcal vaccination or five-yearly vaccination depending on their underlying health problem.

Won't touch 'em with a bargepole. I'm one who feels they actually do more harm than good.

Plus, we become avid readers of packets in the supermarket and are very fussy about what we eat, yet no one ever questions vaccine ingredients or what damage they might do. I doubt even most Doctors know what they are injecting in your veins.

We put such trust in these people, but they actually know so little about what they are giving us.

I came across a book the other day by Suzy Cohen, an integrative pharmacist. It's called 'Drug Muggers', and in she explains what different common drugs do to the body, and how 'side effects' are actually due to the drugs robbing us of different nutritional elements. She lists the elements we should supplement with certain drugs.

We know this, sort of, but how often will your doctor offer you CoQ10 with Statins, or B vitamins with Metformin, etc.?
