Dietitians in Bristol can stop childhood seizures with treatment so revolutionary they are not even sure how it works
The high-fat and protein diet is a last resort when drugs don't work. Its effects have astonished experts at Bristol Children's Hospital.
Children with epilepsy are getting ‘life-changing’ treatment by being put onto a special new diet pioneered in Bristol – but even the experts aren’t quite sure how it works.
The dietician team at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children have seen ‘incredible’ results by switching children who suffer from repeated seizures to a special new diet. The ketogenic diet is high in fat, with lots of protein but low amounts of carbohydrate, and each diet is tailored to the individual child’s needs.
Young patients are referred to the dieticians almost as a last resort, only after they have failed to respond to at least two rounds of the standard anti-epileptic drug treatments and are still suffering from seizures.
