Rebecca Subbiah remembers times when dietitians on Twitter made her cry.

They mocked her intellect. They called her names. They circulated criticisms of her online.

All this happened because Subbiah, who is also a registered dietitian, unwittingly stepped into an online debate about industrial farming practices. She tweeted that she personally prefers organic foods because she believes they're better for the environment.

“It was terrible,” Subbiah said. “Very toxic.”

Such issues have long been controversial among consumers. But in the world of nutrition, they have lately grown so heated that the country’s certifying body for dietitians issued guidance to its members asking them to avoid “belittling” or “humiliating” colleagues in online discussions.

Harassment has become common in the field, according to six dietitians who spoke to The Washington Post. And many think that the growing hostility reflects deepening ideological divides in both the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the professional group — and in nutrition, in general.

The field has been rocked in recent years by accusations of corporate influence and debates about the degree to which environmental, labor and social justice concerns should shape nutritional advice. Dietitian-on-dietitian bullying often unfolds along those lines.

“It’s a reflection of that culture,” said Ashley Colpaart, a registered dietitian who left a leadership role at the academy last year and who also received abusive tweets. “There is a growing divide between these schools of thought — and people are very much engaged in black-or-white thinking.”

    From twitter tonight

    Duane Mellor‏

For people with type 2 diabetes nutritional advice that is provided by a dietitian compared with dietary advice that is provided by other health professionals leads to a greater effect on HbA1c, weight, and LDL cholesterol.

    http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/early/2017/11/01/ajcn.116.139626.short?rss=1/blog&related-urls=yes&legid=ajcn;ajcn.116.139626v1

I'm underwhelmed by the reduction in A1c and LDL, there was no mention of HDL or trigs I would assume given the nature of dietitians dietary advice that HDL would have gone down and trigs up

More fuckwittery. For 12 - 15 years now it has been routine for diabetics on newsgroups and forums to reduce A1c by 5 - 8% and even over 13%, and "nondiabetics" also to double their HDL and drop their trigs through the floor.

If dieticians were actually interested in health they should be all over this, not trumpeting the crap results of mediocre studies. The likes of David Unwin and Ted Naiman are on board of course, let alone Rangan Chatterjee reversing diabetes live on prime-time TV, and even people like my GP are finally starting to notice.

I see the UK Government have now followed the Yanks in blocking access to Sci-Hub. It's only a matter of time before they also block access to blogs and forums not run by The Authorities, the likes of Mellor and David Nunan have been pushing for this, backed of course by the Dietician Hordes.

There's just so much of it. An onslaught of dogma to counter the ever increasing amount of science.

    Meanwhile In Other News

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-42154666

"Mmmmm, it's really sweet!" said the TV reporter approvingly. Of course dieticians will be all over this, minuscule quantities of high carb chemical sludge must be better than real food with appropriate levels of carbs. It's probably vegan too.

I remember this the first time around. A whole bunch of people on DCUK were doing it, but I stopped reading about then so never saw what happened when the diet ended and they returned to their "healthy diet".

Not much use for Graham, or me, or the thousands of non-overweight Type 2s, obviously.

Last thing I need would be ND diet Derek losing weight is not an option, being in a minority thin T2's get little attention because the main focus is calorie restriction,  I think those with RH are even in a worse position I would not trust a dietitian to manage either RH or thin T2's.

If ND is a cure as has been claimed I would like to see what happens after carb loading for a few weeks

    Precisely!

As for Cash In, exactly WHERE are all these successful diabetics to be found? Not on ANY of the diabetes forums and newsgroups, that's for sure. Not in the supermarket either, wheeling round on their scooters with bandaged or missing limbs.

Nor in a lot of the "studies" where they trumpet minuscule reductions in A1c as a "success".

    Meanwhile

Lifestyle change reduces cardiometabolic risk factors and
    glucagon-like peptide-1 levels in obese first-degree
    relatives of people with diabetes

    http://sci-hub.hk/10.1111/jhn.12440

    significantly pathetic.

Now if they'd done things properly

If I posted all of the Tweets I've been collecting I'd probably explode the internet.

Here's someone who knows what they are doing

    https://twitter.com/lowcarbGP/status/926382823082201088

    and his ensuing tweets.

    https://twitter.com/lowcarbGP/status/915622205546999809

    http://www.simplesmartnutrition.com/diet-and-health/americas-feedlot

Meanwhile I already saw the first of this season's "Diets To Avoid" lists, The Pioppi Diet is right up there along with Keto of course, and the Best Diets for Diabetes section starts with Vegetarian. Vegan is #3 and AFAICR #2 is the DASH diet. No link because I don't want to be responsible for this utter fuckwittery to get another click.

I remember this back when it first happened but I didn't see this takedown at the time

    http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=469887&page=1&pp=15

    Meanwhile

no-one seems to have told the doctors and especially not the dieticians. One small step.

Other than other dietitians on social media, does anyone listen to RD's these days? Most of the UK high profile RD's are either over weight or on the junk food payola system, or both. You have to have some empathy for 'em, they have spent their whole career spouting now disproved nonsense, and they can't back down now. Fortunately many will be retiring soon and they can spend their days on Twitter slagging off the informed and true 'Medical Professionals' you know, the people that realise science advances and are not afraid to admit they were wrong.

Yes about the only people who follow dieticians are other dieticians. Meanwhile all the action comes from clueful doctors, researchers, engineers and successful patients.

I suspect one reason they have it in for Tim Noakes is that he used to Believe, and then changed his mind in the face of evidence.

Some of them are very quietly and slowly backing away, like "we never actually recommended HCLF diets for diabetes" or "we always thought LCHF was an option" yeah right.

Meanwhile I have yet to peruse these

    http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/41/Supplement_1

    https://www.aace.com/sites/all/files/diabetes-algorithm-executive-summary.pdf

I also had the DUK Latest but seem to have deleted it by mistake.
