Hi all, some (if not all?) of you may already know me from diabetes.co.uk forums where I'm one of the new trouble-makers in town Smile

I'm Louise, come from a long line of diabetics and having recently been told I'm pre-diabetic, I'm on a quest to get healthy and reduce that blood glucose. Been doing LCHF (lost 16 pounds in nearly 4 weeks), swimming 4-5 hours a week and testing BG frequently to understand what foods (and portion sizes) I can eat to keep my BG as close to normal as possible.

Hi Louise and welcome to the forum. Congrats on the weight loss, amazing. Good to read you're testing regularly as this is key. Do you have to self fund or have you got a decent doc/DSN ? There's a wealth of knowledge here so if you have any questions, please ask. Thanks, Mo

    Hi Louise and welcome! Smile

Sounds like you've got long term plan and you are doing really well! 16 pounds over 4 weeks is pretty darn good indeed! Smile
Keeping my blood glucose as near as non diabetic as possible is my way of thinking too and my meter was a god send in the early days whilst I was working out what I could get away with in terms of total grams of carbs a day but I found that it does get easier and I test my blood much less now as it does become second nature after a while. Smile

Well done with the 5 hours a week swimming too-I'm no athelete but I found that one of the best low impact exercises for me. Smile

    Best wishes

Thanks Mo. I do self fund yes. I haven't actually asked for a meter, but being pre-diabetic I'm pretty sure I know what the answer is going to be anyway. I did already own a glucometer (Freestyle Lite) as we have a strong family history of diabetes, so I did do random checks occasionally. Hadn't checked for a year or so, so went to buy some new strips and was gobsmacked at the price. Luckily, I stumbled across a post about the SD Codefree and switched to that last week. I like it so far...I mean it's ugly...but it's functional LOL.

I don't have a DSN with being prediabetic, but my employer fills the gap and has funded some CBT for overeating and also a dietician - who I haven't seen yet. If I did want some diabetic advice, I'd just book into the diabetic nurse anyway, but I think I'm picking it up pretty quickly and I'm not sure I'd agree with their dietary advice anyway. I've done the weightloss thing their way for years and it resulted in miniscule weight loss...switched to low carb and the weight is dropping off! My BG is taking a while to settle down, but maybe because it's only slightly above normal anyway...still, I'd like it lower in the longer term.

Yes, I think I have a long term plan, and thankfully without my GP and nurse butting in LOL. I'm happy with the way things are going for now anyway. I love my meter and i'm learning so much about how foods are affecting my blood glucose. For example, I've discovered white bread is definitely a no-no, lower carb bread is fine if I only have 1 slice, high fat or protein will give me an ok bedtime reading but high morning reading and sugar in any form gives me a big spike up to about 10. Not tried rice yet, or pasta as I'd rather get my few carbs from something more nutricious. Tonight, they're coming from broccoli and cauliflower in the form of a broccoli and cauliflower cheese....yummmmmy Smile

Hi Louise, don't know if you've noticed but on the "other forum" there's a lady called Etty she's a pre-diabetic who's stayed that way for over five years thanks to sticking with a LowCarb diet, with luck you can emulate her and stay free of diabetes.

I hope so Graham! If I don't, it won't be through lack of trying LOL. It's not been an easy month so far, but I feel I'm accomplishing something now, and I know it will get easier in time. I think I've found my sweet spot carb-wise, or I'm getting nearer anyway.
