How to Upset a Carp Angler

Post by JohnWilson on Sun Sep 14 2014, 20:26

My brother rang tonight and told me he was fishing some local pond tomorrow for carp. Now, what non-anglers have to know is that carp anglers are a very exotic species, very different from your run of the mill fresh water anglers – with their baits -‘broilies’?, rigs - ‘critically balanced hemp rig’? and above all a fanatically protective attitude to the fish. When Julie knows that Michael is going carp fishing she always gets a dismissive grunt by asking him to bring some back for eating!

This all dates back to the 90s to when Michael and family visited Singapore. On one occasion Julie served fish as part of a meal. The fish was served with belachin – a shrimp paste fried with onion and garlic. Michael loved the meal and particularly the fish.

At Changi, waiting for his flight, I mention that Julie’s dad had a large pond in which he had kept Koi. He asked why he had not kept the Koi. I explained that he had refused to cull them and they quickly reverted to feral common carp within a few generations. Julie’ mum always sent a few down to Singapore……………….

    No Andy,

John Wilson was my grand father and user name on DCUK banned for a piece I had written on David's old forum. My brother has been instrumental in getting several carp ponds dug out by local farmers. Its becoming more and more popular.

    Hi Andy

The John Wilson here I know well, he used to be a fisherman when fish threw themselves on a hook. He calls it the good old days, when men were men and sheep were nervous lol!

Oh no, please don't mention sheep Eddie. I am totally and utterly scared of sheep. They are vicious and not to be trusted at all, a bit like a few people I could mention.

Sheep? We have mountain goats on our fishing marks!

    http://www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/fishing-at-boulby

When I came back from Singapore, some young men showed me a mark at Robin Hoods Bay. As I was fishing I vowed to myself if I ever got back alive........... The same young men offered to take me to Boulby [see above link]. I declined.

After realising I was no longer in my twenties I passed on all my fishing tackle to my younger brother.
