    Hi guys

Hope you don't mind me asking a question please

I have been extreme low carbing for a couple of weeks, even more than usual lol

Yesterday was my wife's birthday, her favourite cake is coffee and walnut from M&S so I bought her one and after lunch had a sizeable chunk, it was pretty dammed amazing but anyway

About 10 to 20 minutes later I went from wide awake to a virtual coma, she couldn't wake me, I woke up 2 hours later feeling unbelievably crap, it was like a really bad hangover, I had a banging headache and feel a little sick and generally dreadful, this lasted for the rest of the day

So my question is, as this has happened before, is this an effect of the low carbing or a symptom of something else?

Interestingly my daughter was diagnosed hyperinsulinism at about 2 yrs old, she was having a gtt thingy at GOSH and they gave her lucazade, she went into a similar coma and they couldn't wake her, they said this wasn't normal and it led to different tests etc

I now wonder if whatever this is has been passed to the kids, my eldest was also diagnosed hyperinsulinism at about 13 but don't think sugar hits do this to her

Thank you for reading and I'd appreciate any comments

    Hi Andy

Firstly belated Happy Birthday Wishes to your wife - hope she did enjoy her day.

Secondly, was sorry to read about your reaction to having a slice of her favourite M&S cake!

As you are no doubt aware, I am not diabetic but do eat LCHF. I do know that if, on the rare occasion, that I do eat too high a carb content from what is my usual daily amount (no more than 50) I very often have a bad headache / feel unwell the following day.

Living with Eddie a type 2 diabetic, and also having had the opportunity of  talking with and exchanging experiences with other type 2 diabetics over the past eight years if as you state you went into a 'virtual coma' this does not sound 'normal' to me.

I hope that other diabetics may reply to your question here ...

I can only say that my advice to you (or anyone) in that situation you described would be to check things out with your GP.

However, knowing you you'll probably ignore it!!!  Evil or Very Mad

The decision is always down to the patient ... but please keep us posted

    Wishing you well ...

    All the best Jan

Hi Andy, I don't no much about hyperinsulinism but I do realise one of the symptoms is  hypoglycaemia, given it only took 10 to 20 minutes after the cake for you to start feeling rough suggests you had high BG and not a hypo, seeing the coffee and walnut cake is over 50g carbs a serving it's hardly surprising but your symptoms were more severe than I would expect. I suppose it could the carb fest after a couple of weeks of extreme low carb was a shock to the system pity you were unable to check your BG levels

I agree with Jan it's far from normal for a T2 so if your symptoms persist you may have to bite the bullet and make an appointment with your Doc

    Keep us updated Andy

    Thankyou Graham

I didn't see it coming, one minute i was happily enjoying my guilt and next it was 2 hours later and the sledge hammer had fallen so didn't check bg unfortunately

I am not expecting symptons to pesist as I won't be repeating the cake incident, its just wasn't worth it

although on saying that, my holiday in August will get a little messy I'm sure so will see what happens Smile

in my opinion doctors are crap (sweeping generalisation) and won't be seeing them unless I have no choice, i.e. I'm carried there on a stretcher hehe

I still think your symptoms from eating the cake were abnormal Andy not the reaction you would expect from a standard type 2, anyway keep away from the cake and enjoy your holiday sunny

I used to do something similar but less extreme and it didn't onset so quickly.

Once I took mother to visit my aunts, and they insisted I eat some cake.

    Half an hour later

    "Why's he fallen asleep?"

Well I tried to warn them <sigh>

Yes Andy it's normal for diabetics to feel drowsy and nod off after carb blow out but it's definitely not normal to be comatose as you were facepalm
