I'm sure we all get headaches from time to time ... but migraines are something more ...

We talk here mainly about diabetes, although our articles/posts cover a much wider variety too ...

One recent piece I spotted, about migraines, was from Dr J McCormack, which you might find interesting.

Does the saying ' Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.' come to mind here?

    "My way of handling migraine

In the days before I talked about lifestyle so much with my patients, I treated migraine according to the standard way as outlined by our local neurologist at the tertiary centre, but I tended to gloss over the first section about addressing lifestyle.

Nowadays with my focus on diet and lifestyle, I look at that carefully first. For instance, there is not much point looking at triptans, if a person’s nutrition consists of just biscuits.

Today I saw a 50 yr woman who had what I call a busy person’s diet:

    No breakfast.

Cereal bar or toast at work.

    Sandwich for lunch

    Pasta for tea

    Fruit as snacks

The trouble with this way of eating is that the blood sugar will be up and down all day in a random way, and as a result she will be very carbohydrate dependent and probably have to have a snack every 2-3 hours.

There are doctors who suggest that a real food way of life( higher in good fats and lower in sugars and starches) does away with the need to eat a meal or snack every few hours, and that eating like that will tend to make headaches go away. It is worth discussing and is what I suggest before any other methods- such as drugs- are tried. "

    Yep that was me too!

Strangely I never had headaches, but I used to have irregular but comparatively mild migraines - well not as bad as some people report but always with the visual "aura" followed by a feeling that someone had clamped my head, and at their worst that sounds turned into noises that occurred on the surface on my ears.

Once I went out and shouted at the storemen who were doing a lot of clanking outside my office, and the shout was even worse than the clanking.

Since low carbing, not a one.

Reading around other blogs who have told of their experiences since low carbing ... many have said that migraines / headaches have improved or completely gone ...

... and other illnesses / conditions, for example epilepsy, can also be improved too ...!

The only thing I had that didn't improve was acid reflux - which was disappointing as it is common for it to resolve on low carb.

Giving up wheat did the trick though.
