I might have missed introducing myself. Empty I might have missed introducing myself.

Post by Wobblycogs Fri Nov 20 2015, 07:23

    Hi everyone.

I am a 76 years old retired Police Officer from West Midlands.  I left school at 15 years of age, in 1954, and inside 6 months I had joined the Royal Navy, at the infamous, HMS Ganges, Training School near Ipswich. That lot probably won't interest you folk, so I'll just say that until I was around 32 I never had any issues whatsoever with my weight.

I was bought up on a diet of stodge, and fat and my daily tea was bread, butter and Tate and Lyle's Golden Syrup. Sometimes jam, sometimes condensed milk or lemon-curd sandwiches! I would easily get through four or five 'rounds' at a sitting. Bacon and eggs were for Sunday breakfast, and in the week it was porridge or shredded wheat. Of course I also ate substantial daily meals of meat and two-veg. As a youngster I didn't like fish, as I found the messing about sorting out fishy-bones distasteful. So my protein was mainly meat and poultry. Not much of that mind, due to rationing. I played football, ran around wild, and generally had a great time annoying the 'grown-ups'! (I didn't like apples, so I never got tempted to scrump any! I much preferred under ripe pears which I  scavenged from a huge tree in a local farmer's field! I never fell out of the tree, but looking at it now I don't know how I managed it! )  So, a fairly active lifestyle kept me skinny.

As a young adult my diet didn't change much and from 1954 on I began to pack on the muscle. Still not overweight but fit as a flea.  I was a seaman, which meant the hard work of keeping the ship clean fell to me and my peers. I also spent some time as  'Club Swinger'; a Physical Training Instructor. It wasn't really for me and I returned to fixing and servicing torpedoes.

I became a Police Officer in 1965 after 12 months in 'civvy-street' going from job to job. Still no weight issues and certainly not diabetic. For the fist three years I walked the beat. And apart from cycling to and from work, my beat pounding was all the exercise I had.

I started to pad out after the introduction of Police Panda cars. Surprise-surprise! After that I never looked back in the weight gaining stakes, despite  cutting down on fat, and indulging in Government recommended 'healthy-eating'.

That's a laugh innit!  It would be, if it wasn't so seriously criminal of the nutritional experts. I woke up to LCHF about three years ago, when I stumbled across a book called 'Waist Disposal', by Dr. John Briffa. I went onto his recommended diet, and have been losing weight steadily ever since. I still need to lose about three stones by the way!

Being retired means I have time on my hands. (Or I did until my wife contracted Parkinson's disease.)  So now I am a full-time carer, with control over the house and the food. I can't deny my wife the things she likes, but I do try to cut down on the stodge, and she is happy eating more or less the same diet as me.

I was 'diagnosed' type 2 about 18 months ago, and was prescribed Metformin. I don't take them, and I manage my BS with diet and walking; plus some woodwork and gardening.  That seems to be working.

Right folks. Having bored you to death, I think you know a bit more about me. So I'll leave you all in peace, and keep visiting this interesting, informative Forum.

    Cheers,

Nice one Wobbly, retired Policeman eh, we won't hold that against you rofl Good grief how things have changed since your days in the force. I lived on a very tough council estate as a kid. We knew the names of most of the local Police and they new ours. They rode around on very quiet Velocette motor bikes we called Noddy bikes. No lip to the Police in those days and if you hit a copper it was a certain prison sentence. I never had any trouble with the Police but a few of my mates did. My old man was an ex Royal Marine and if I had got into trouble with the law he would have gone ballistic. How things have changed, I remember when we had a proper Police force. The Police were tough but fair and people respected them. Not everything has improved over time.

    Talk again later mate.

    Thanks Eddie.

Yes indeed things changed.  But I carry on putting one foot in front of the other, even though my metal-mickey knees cause problems with stairs!

I like this forum There is another one for diabetics, but this one talks more about the diet approach, which suits me.

    Cheers.

Incidentally there's a lot of research into controlling Parkinsons, as well as many other brain diseases, using a ketogenic diet.

Me too... Although I never looked at it that way, because I don't recall much of the war prior to 1941. In fact, '41 is my earliest memory of it all; and I do remember being stung by a wasp, right after my Dad photographed me, standing on the turfed-over air-raid shelter, he had buried in the garden.

What a summer that was... So they tell me! welcome  Derek...

    Thanks for the welcome BTW.
Have vivid memories of being chased by a Rhode Island Red cockerel when I was quite young. My dad sorted it and we had for Sunday lunch, which we called dinner on our council estate. Smile

    Hi Derek..

I am on a MAC, so I don't get any pop-up ads at all. On the Yahoo site there are a few ads included on some videos one might want to view, but that's all. I just ignore them, or click them away.

I used adblock too with Windows, One of the reasons I got a Mac was the virus and malware problem, but there isn't so much of it, if any, with Mac.

Yep tha'ts the same with me the latest was an iPhone for a quid  Shocked still that's got to be better than the DUK banner that runs if I switch off adblock on my android.

Suppose that's the price we pay for the freeforums hosting of this forum
