Pushing The Envelope Empty Pushing The Envelope

I recently pondered why I seemed to eat more on days I did less. I considered that maybe it was on days *after* I'd been active that I got more hungry.

Well I tried an experiment which suggests I was correct in this surmise.

Mainly due to the weather and other factors I'd been alternating active days with less active ones. This week being mostly fine, I went for a prolonged walk on wednesday, and another one on thursday, both times going about 9 - 10 hours between meals.

So I went for a hat trick, had my usual breakfast of a buttered oatcake with smoked salmon around 11 today, followed later by a handful of nuts. Went shopping around 2 and then on to the estuary where I walked for a while, then stopped and chatted to some people while another Osprey was flying around.

On to the hide and sat for a long while watching the Osprey and chatting to some other people who came and went, and lending some of them my binoculars and scope.

However I only lasted until around 5 before I started getting quite hungry, and drove home and ate around 6.

The hunger was still qualitatively different from the carb cravings I used to get after 2 - 3 hours on a low fat diet, it was *genuine* hunger.

So after two days of prolonged not-eating it does seem to catch up with me eventually.

Yesterday I had an inactive day and got hungry enough to need three whole meals.

So yes I suspect the pattern is that my body assumes while I'm walking and gardening I'm actually hunting and gathering and need to stay well fed but light and agile.

When I stop it assumes I have collected enough food and need to eat more of it while it's still there.

Either way the quality of the hunger as well as the quantitiy is quite different from when I was eating a high carb low fat diet - then it was more like MUST EAT NOW!!! before I fall over.
