Should people with diabetes avoid carbs? Empty Should people with diabetes avoid carbs?

Diabetes UK recommends that people with diabetes should try to eat a healthy balanced diet, as depicted in the eatwell plate, and to include starchy foods at every meal. Steer clear of cutting out entire food groups. It is recommended that everyone with diabetes sees a registered dietitian for specific advice on their food choices. Your GP can refer you to a registered dietitian.

Diabetes UK says there is some evidence which suggests that low-carb diets can lead to weight loss and improvements in blood glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes in the short term. However, it is unclear whether the diet is a safe and effective way to manage type 2 diabetes in the long term.

Weight loss from a low-carb diet may be because of a reduced intake of calories overall and not specifically as a result of eating less carbohydrate. There is also not enough evidence to support the use of low-carb diets in people with type 1 diabetes.

Douglas Twenefour, Diabetes UK clinical adviser, says: “When considering a low-carbohydrate diet as an option, people with diabetes should be made aware of possible side effects such as the risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). We also advise that people with diabetes discuss the amount of carbohydrate to be restricted with their healthcare team.

“The best way to manage diabetes is by taking prescribed medications and by maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes plenty of physical activity and a balanced diet that is low in saturated fat, salt and sugar and rich in fruit and vegetables, without completely cutting out any particular food groups.”

Read Diabetes UK's review of the evidence from 1998 to 2009 on low-carb diets and their conclusions.

Is it any wonder the drugs bill is going through the roof, I don't think these so called experts have ever seen the effects of the eatwell plate on the BGs of a T2.

The comments aren't very complimentary either Mad

DUK is a misinformation outfit they make a lot of noise about the ever growing diabetes epidemic, they never stop telling us about the grim repercussions uncontrolled diabetes brings, but they perpetuate the carnage. A half awake newbie with a BG meter learns very quickly the DUK dietary recommendations are ludicrous. The big question is how do they get away with the misinformation year after year. Could it be people don’t care, they know the information is deeply flawed, but do nothing and say nothing, mustn't rock the boat, don’t want to labelled a troublemaker.

"An independent inquiry into child sexual abuse in the town, led by Professor Alexis Jay, was established in 2013 for Rotherham Council. The inquiry's initial report, published on 26 August 2014, condemned the failure of the authorities in Rotherham to act effectively against the abuse and even, in some cases, to acknowledge that it was taking place. It conservatively estimated that 1,400 children had been sexually abused in the town between 1997 and 2013, predominantly by gangs of British-Pakistani men. Abuses described by the report included abduction, rape, torture and sex trafficking of children." Wiki

Much of this horror story was well known for years by social workers, council workers, the police and other authorities. This situation has gone on in other towns and cities for a very long time. It went on and I suspect it is still going on, because no one wanted to rock the boat, no one wanted to be labelled the trouble maker. This is the world we now live in, people see corruption, misinformation and lies all around them, and ignore it, they turn away, someone else can deal with that, not my problem, bound to be someone along soon with a bigmouth, who won’t let it go, let them take the flack.

You can report ther comments as being offensive or unsuitable, pity you can't report the article itself.

The only reason I'd ever see a dietician ever again is if I could eat her with fava beans and a fine chianti. All that fat would do me a power of good.
