Smoked Cods Roe Empty Smoked Cods Roe

One of my little indulgences, I prefer it to caviar.

Although Pinneys do mail order, they're only just down the coast from me, and several local shops and farm shops sell some of their products, so I usually visit the shop, or the restaurant (you usually have to book) or both when I'm in the area.

Traditionally it's served on toast. I can get away with that in the restaurant provided I go for a prolonged walk along the sea wall afterwards.

At home I spread it thickly on an oatcake (butter is unneccessary) and for the full effect I toast some almonds in a dry pan and push them into the top.

... and sometimes we all deserve a little indulgence !

" smoked cod roe is a delicious treat fit for the real connoisseur. Full of the flavour of the sea, our smoked cod's roe is best served with toast, lemon and pepper and a good chilled wine. Or create your very own taramasalata and enjoy with pitta bread and black olives. "

... and why not make some lovely TARAMASALATA CREAM

This is Mrs Rannie's recipe, and very good it is too.

    INGREDIENTS
    200g Smoked Cod's Roe
    1tbs Olive Oil
    1 tbls fresh lemon juice
    1tbs onion juice
    1/3 pint of whipped cream
    freshly ground black pepper

    METHOD
Mix cod's roe and olive oil together using a fork.
Once malleable, add the lemon and onion juice
    Add pepper to taste
Fold through whipped cream, keeping the mixture a light as possible

    TO SERVE
Serve with oatcakes or hot toast.Click here to print this recipe

Oh yes I forgot the lemon slice to squeeze onto the top!

CAUTION: after squeezing lemon DO NOT rub your eye when an insect flies into it.

I had a flashback, when I was little and you queued at the counters in Sainsburies and they patted butter and sliced bacon on demand, they sold little stone jars of smoked cod's roe. Then I remembered Shippham's fish paste, and bloater paste.

... I can remember shopping with my mum at Sainsburys and yes, they also cut the cheese / sliced the bacon to order and it tasted so good. It was about a twenty minute walk there and back and she had one of these shopping baskets on wheels.

It looked a bit like this

And yes, we used to occasionally have Shippams pastes, more about that here

Hahaaa brilliant! Yes I remember the little metal ring that held the lid on. Had no idea it was still in production as it's not the sort of thing I look for nowadays.

Gran had a shopping basket with wheels just like that. Some people had rectangular tartan ones. We had an ordinary basket with handles, which also served to contain a picnic when we went out. We used the car for shopping a lot but on fine days we would either cycle or walk up the lane and through the park and think nothing of carrying the shopping all the way home.

In fact for most of my life I've walked to the shops and back, including from work in my lunch hour, another good way to get some exercise and actually achieve something at the same time.

Recently I've reverted to using the car again, but then instead of walking through the village I drive on and do the walking somewhere else. First time I did that with this car I put the shopping on the passenger seat and when I drove off all kinds of lights started flashing, then a bleeper started up. Yes, you guessed it, the shopping didn't have it's seatbelt on. Damn computers . . .

This is a Nissan but the computer probably comes from the same source. My Renault never did that, nor did my VW.

Also the Nissan is the first car I ever had without an ashtray. The salesman told me it is a legal requirement not to have one in a modern car, I didn't know if he was serious or taking the piss.

What's wrong with the Pug? My cousin's had one for years and it hasn't burst into flames yet.
